Thought I'd start a thread about plum head parrots. Do they breed in winter and do I need an insulated nest box like hooded parrots. The pair I have are very timid and sit at the back of the aviary every time I go near it, will they ever get used to me. I have had them about 2 months now.

Sorry, Think this should be in Ringnecks Section I think the plumheads could stand to remain in the foreign parrot section. Been asiatics is the only underlying relationship between plumheads and ringies. Unfortunately, plumheads are very seasonal breeders. You'd be able to get a maximum of three clutches per season if you pull their eggs. It is unlikely that they will breed through winter in an outdoor situation. However, if you have them indoors under a controlled environment you definitely should be able to get them going.

Thanks for the advice Tim. They are outdoors but in a shadecloth enclosed area close to the house. We are south of Brisbane but we often get frosts here so looks like it will be summer breeding for them.

However, it's a safe bet to say that they'll start their breeding season from August-September.

Hi Bill, I don't know how they would go Bill. Mine are very quiet birds and don't show any aggression at all to the other birds in neighbouring aviaries but that might be different if they were in together. I guess if the aviary is big enough they would be OK. Princesses and cockatiels don't seem to mind other birds too much but my princesses get a bit possesive at breeding time. I have been told that plumheads like a choice of nestboxes so that might create a problem if they try to take one of the other birds boxes. Having said that, they are very attractive birds and well worth having even if it's just to look at. Regards bev

Hi Bill, I'd be a bit wary about putting a timid pair of plumheads in with the tiels. I've seen some pretty bad damage to a PH cock bird after it got in the way of a male tiel. He lost most of his upper mandible. From what I know about them, they're normally a pretty timid bird anyway and I wouldn't put them into an avairy with larger birds unless it was pretty big and there was room for them to hide.
Beautiful birds though.
Cheers, Viraba
