I have rescued a lot of native birds as well as a couple of homing pigeons. Some of the birds were released like the crow that was in someones backyard that couln't fly because it was a juvinile just learning to fly. Another was a galah that I named Peachy. She got hit by a car and found by my friends mum who did wildlife rescue, but only specilised in the furry animals. Here are some pictures of my rescued birds i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc132/Birdzy/pics005.jpg[/IMG]

Thinking about it what are they like hand-raised? Have had a hand tamed eastern but that was a very long time ago when I had a waist and everything sat nicely in the north

What a nice looking bird but I hope you return him/her to her home the wild when he/she fully recovers.

Most animals do get returned to "nature" or the "wild". It is my understanding that only those who do not fully recover are not released but can make a pet.

Jules will correct me if I am wrong but from my understanding a native bird/animal that can't be released back into the wild and live naturally as it was born too is norm euthanised. Well thats what a WIRES person I know told me.

its very different in SA, if in doubt dont release and you can keep the animal and if you hodl teh appropriatte keep/sell permit for the species you can sell the offspring of protected animals

Yes Seb, you are right, a lot of the ones that can't be released get euthanized. It depends on the species of animal and what is wrong with them. If you have the appropriate licences they can sometimes live out their lives with the carer. Some get sent to be used in captive breeding programmes and others get kept for education purposes. Unfortunately being a wildlife carer can be very heartbreaking and you have to make some tough decisions.

The Rosella is a yellow rosella. We get quite a few up in the riverland. There are some more pics and I'll post some more so you guys can see some more pics of the rosella and other birds I have rescued. The rosella I released ages ago. It suffered a broken wing and was given to me from one of my neighours.

Heres some more pics The galah given to me that had a broken wing. The wing got its strength back and the galah named Peachy was released. My pet galah Mango wasn't that happy because I think he fell in love with her. Picture of my pet maggie that still hangs around the propety. His name is Big, but my mum calls him Pew. Yellow Rosella

I have a friend here who with her daughter did some rescue work for a couple of years. I do know that those that are seriously injured are humainly put down, but those that can be saved, or helped or rescued and cannot be released back into the wild are then placed as pets. But most do end up back in the wild if they can be saved.
