Just a quick question guys!!!
I found a young pink and grey cocky yesterday, it has a broken wing (break is at what i would assume to be the wrist joint? ) and i was wondering what would be the best way to pin the wing until i can get her to a vet? this is my first experience with a break in this area so im not quite sure how to go about it!! the wing has been supported in one of my wingslings for the last day (the wing sling is just a sock slipped over the birds body to support and hold the broken wing against the birds body {also to stop any chewing} with the good wing being place through a side hole so that it can be moved freely). I dont think she will be flying again well not atleast anytime soon as the bone is snapped right through. Thankfully she is actually feeding from me, i didnt think she would because she is quite old, so hopefully she will be ok!!

It sounds to me like you've already done the right thing Megan, although this is not my area of expertise. hopefully Jules will have a suggestion Good Luck

I would have suggested to tape her wing to her body.........but a body sock is perfect.

I ussually do tape the wing to the body but havent got the right tape here, if i use regular tape i risk pulling out her feathers when i remove it (ouuuch!) I ussually use the tape and the sling in conjunction because i find the sling keeps them warm when they are in shock. She seems to be comfortable at the moment and is being a little guts, now who said you cant get a bird to feed on a spoon after they have reached a certain age huh:)? She is going to the vet tomorrow so hopefully all will be good

Thats great. I was gonna say that you were doing the right thing, you just have to make sure the bones line up when the wing is strapped or the sling is used.

Yep bones all lined up, i think it will take a while to heal and i dont think she will fly after wards as the break was worse than we thought. But then she may suprise us and fly perfectly fine! shes quite happy in he cage at the moment and like to sleep in the nesting box thats in there, must be nice and cosy for her

oh that is really good news Megzly. I hope she does well. I have a soft spot for the galahs.......my Bo was a galah and I had her for 15 years until she passed away suddenly.

Sadly tracey this little girl passed away yesterday too, She must have had underlying problems thatneither me or the vet could pick up. Galahs are beautiful birds with their funny antics and happy nature.

Oh that is sad. Unfortunately the thing that kills birds the most is shock. They can last for days and even weeks and seem to be fine until they suddenly die for no apparent reason. Those of us who care for wild birds usually have a success rate of less than 30%, often much lower, shock and stress being the main killers.
