Ok so after all the metal poisoning and what not, we did an X-ray last monday which showed metal in her stomach (I work at an X-ray place and the radiographer wanted to try one). The vet checked it too and she confirmed it was metal so Matches continued her medication. The monday just been we did another one at work which showed up no abnormalities! Yay. I dropped it into the vet today and she gave me the all clear to say she's healthy and all the metal is gone!! FINALLY SHE'S WELL and off the medication at last WOO!! I wonder what she'll be like off her meds LOL! Just thought I'd let you know. Beetle, Matches and me!

Dad had some tea candles out for that one hour of lights out thing (i wasnt home though so i didnt know he did it), and she flew up to the bar which i didnt mind cos i had removed everything before but the teacandles cos i didnt realise they were there. she chewed a bit of the metal bit around the candle and swallowed it..those candles were all thrown out straight away.

Good to hear Matches is all in the clear again From what I have read about metal poisoning it is a terrible and dangerous thing for a bird to get. So well done on your quick reaction and getting Matches off for help Great to see a healthy Matches back! Tasha

Sorry for the late reply Courtney....just finally had time to browse the forum so came accross this post...well my firts question was already answered."how Matches got the metal poisoning" but now I wanted to ask, how did you discover that there was something wrong with Matches. How was she acting? I'm curious to learn so that maybe if it ever happened to me, I'd be familiar with the symptoms?? Thanks

I think in Matches case she was actually 'being sick" or what looked like reguritating.....but she was really too young for that type of behaviour (usually done when older and usually to their "mate" or fav human)

Hmmmm...Pinchy used to regurtitate aswell....and he was only 6 months. But he'd only do it if he was in my hand and I was patting him so I just took it as his sign of affection??

Matches would mainly do it to certain things but only head bobbing and eye pinning so i thought it was affection at first but I wasn't sure so I took her to the vet...I think before I took her she actually vomitted. She got worse before she got better. Even after the injection she still regurgitated and was losing balance and would nearly fall. But she never lost her playfulness.
She was only just over 3 months so way too young to be doing it. Even the receptionist at the vet told me on the phone that she shouldnt be doing it and booked me an urgent appointment. She took blood samples to get tested but the results came back fine. But because she was still doing it she thought it might be another sort of metal. Then at easter she called me and asked how she was going with no improvement and she told me to meet her at the surgery as she doesnt want to leave her without treatment over the long weekend (i thought that was nice of her coming in when they were closed). She had lost a bit of weight too and was drinking more water than usual which also were signs. So she had an injection and I had to give her oral medicine 2 times a day for 2 weeks....ended up lasting about a month and a half until we did a few xrays until it showed she was clear of metal.

Yeah my vet is really nice, she loves beetle too. Even though she HATED taking the oral medicine and was being so difficult trying to catch her to take it, it still won't deter her from chewing anything and everything in the way of her beak lol. Im glad its all over with too.
