I'm thinking about getting a hand raised quaker. Has anyone had any experience with them?

Noisy .... and i'd say have to be hand raised well to make great pets ... the one i owned was hand raised and was around 6 months or more when i bought her home ... and all she did was bite and scream ... (My personal view) But best to ask Abby she breeders them ... and hand raises them

She was blue ... but they didnt keep up the handling of her ... as they had quiet a few hand reared birds .. needing new homes ... She was cute to look at .. but i couldnt do anything with her ... and at the time i got her ... i was busy with a full time job etc ... and realised i'd made a mistake .. She also liked jim wayyy more then me ... and he was home less then i was ... soo yeahh i re-homed her ... that was like 2 years ago now .... I also made the mistake of picking the bird i could buy straight away ... when really my heart wanted a sun conure ... (Nowww if i had my time over ... i wouldnt pick either) .... hehehe nahhh thats probably now true .. i love my little pino to death .. but jim on the other hand .. says she is just lucky she is cute .. I would probably get quakers as avairy birds if i had the chance ... but not as a pet ... just dont think they are my style of bird or something

my daughter was given a hand raised blue quaker, it came home a week ago. in that time the whole family has come to love it's cheeky nature. we dont find it to be excessively noisy, makes enough noise to get our attention when it wants out of its cage or wants some fresh fruit, just like a kid lol. our bird was hand raised by one of the members here who I am sure would have the information you want.

I'm looking at a quaker as I really want a decent sized bird. OH wants me to buy a cockateil, as they are much cheaper, but I wanted something a little bigger. I really want a bird that can talk and according to a list I found, these were the least demanding birds who could talk (after budgies and cockateils). I'm still a novice so I don't want anything to complex.

Ok this would be where I come in as the quaker person. get ready for a small essay. I've got a blue breeding pair who had their first lot of bubs last season. They're gorgeous. Both talk are generally affectionate (exception being when they had eggs and the female became a psycho wench for awhile) and are gorgeous. Mick has one of their babies and I'm in contact with the owners of the others who all seem to be going well and behaving. BTW Mick, Donna said that Pippin does that same thing as Storm when she wants out. Then we have Barney. Barney is my green boy who was meant to be our pet quaker. He's a nightmare. Cage territorial to the extreme, arrogant, cage escapee by undoing bolts which take me forever to find and has been through a period when life got too much and started chewing his feathers. That's calmed down. He hasn't been the ideal pet despite getting the same and more attention then the blues. I'm now on the look out for a dominating blue girl to pair with him for next season so someone can knock him into line. He's possibly split blue. I really couldn't say for sure that it's a colour thing. I have read somewhere that the greens are generally bigger (not true here) and the blues have a more gentle personality (generally true here but could be coincidence). If I can find this girl for Barney and get some green and blue babes next season I'll be in more of a position to give my personal thoughts. Now addressing your second post. Quakers are a similar size to the cockatiels but much stockier. They have the potential to talk. My blues do, Barney very rarely says much. Not all will talk, others won't shut up. I find they can be fairly demanding and will let you know what they want. They will try and dominate you wherever possible and you have to be on top if this from day 1. Lotsa of toys are needed to keep that little brain amused. They're a very intelligent bird. If they aren't mentally stimulated then problems can occur. Even if they are problems can still occur. I use Barney as an example, my gut feeling with him is that he's just a jerk by nature. I don't think it's got anything to do with how he was handraised or his colour. Ok that's some of the nasties of quakers. The good points. A "good" quaker will be the most loving companion. I think as Mick is possibly finding with Storm they can be very intuitive. They just want kisses, cuddles and love. Some of the stuff that comes out of that beak will surprise you to no end. If you really want a quaker and haven't been put off, , then I suggest you get hold of the book Guide to the Quaker parrot- Mattie Sue Athan.- excellent book and one I recommend highly to any new or potential quaker owner. An interesting site to look at is this one. Oz Quaker siteAs I've been typing Barney is soaring through the house. Yet again he's pulled apart the nut and bolt on one of his doors and gotten out. I'll be spending the next 20 minutes or so working out where the little horror has hidden them. Hope this has helped. Any other questions please ask away.

I have seen quakers being bullies to other birds, they have ganged up on other birds and chased them. Also they are a bit noisy...not loud but noisy. But they are very cute!!! Would love to see pics if you get one! My uncle has a blue one and she is a bit nippy but is sweet at times.

Actually Courtney my observation owning and breeding both Quakers and GCCs is that the greencheeks are more often bullies then quakers.
The blue quakers were quite happy in the aviary with Diego (sun conure) for quite a few months. Even when Zali arrived they left her alone. Suns and quakers are now separated again though but not due to any fighting.
I think unless you live with a particular species it's quite difficult to make an accurate assessment of them. I don't comment on the personality of Alexandrines because I have never owned one.

This was just me watching the quakers at breeders and petshops used to chase and bully the other birds. I'm not talking about alex's lol, cos if you were asking about then i could tell you straight out my girl is a bully to other birds...she just is lol. Where as my green cheek will not bite back. Matches could be fully biting her and she will not bite back...I know, i too found that strange...i kind of hoped she would be a bit more confronting to put Matches in her place but she is too sweet lol. Maybe you could bring one of yours around to show Matches she's not the queen of the world LOL! I can't say too much bad about the quaker as i was either going to get an alexandrine or a quaker but it's just what I've seen and what my uncle has told me about his quaker too. Don't get me wrong they are very sweet but i want it not to be sugar coated when chosing a bird. Just me though maybe.
