Hi I was wondering if any irn experts could take a look at the pics below. I'm a bit worried about my lutino irn. As I've only had him approx 2 weeks, I don't know if this is normal or not.... The lutino irn has browny/orangy edging/outlines to the ends of his tail feathers. Is this normal or a sign of a problem?? Thanks heaps!!

Have the tail feathers looked like this from when you got him? It looks like dirt to me possibly from climbing around a dirty or rusty cage. What are his body and wing feathers like? Try giving the tail a wash.
cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike - No, ythe rest of the feathers aren't like it. I don't know if they were like this when I got him but I think I would've noticed it if it was like that before ....I'll try to wash his tail then that'll be fun hmmm.... I've just thought of something, they do have a red mineral stone perch in their cage, maybe from that?? I'll see what happens after the wash then Thanks again.

Hi Courtzrocks...he's a '06 baby apparently,..... which does seem strange to me, considering he still hasn't a ring, yet the 07 blue one is already starting to show his ring...hmmm...

HAHAHA Yeah i would say its the mineral perch maybe, is it like the calcium perches? Matches gets a re mouth and pink feet after standing on hers so its probably that lol.

Well I washed his tail...lol...wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be....it's still wet so a bit hard to see the difference but i think it does look more normal now....so maybe yeah...it must've been that darn perch. Oh geez I'm a dill ...I guess since Pinchy's death I've now become extra extra paranoid..... Well thanks everyone, sorry about the false alarm.

Hi Courtzrocks...he's a '06 baby apparently,..... which does seem strange to me, considering he still hasn't a ring, yet the 07 blue one is already starting to show his ring...hmmm... Most ringnecks get a ring at 2 years, so a baby hatched in spring of 2006 should get a ring this coming summer. Some babies do get a ring after 1 year - maybe around 10 % but a 2007 baby which presumably hatched around 6 to 8 months ago will not have a ring yet. Often there is a darkish "ring" showing up around the neck but both hens and cocks have this. With a blue ringneck you need to see white feathers on the backof the neck as well as jet black (not grey) feathers to have a true male ring. I wouldn't normally expect that for a 2007 bird until this coming summer at the earliest. cheers, Mike

Typical of a young ringneck of both sexes. The "false" ring gets lots of our customers fooled and you will see the difference when the first true black feather comes through, possible during the moult next summer but maybe not until well into 2009.
cheers,
Mike

Yes Takoda (alexandrine) has had "that" ring since he had feathers. Pauline (petiel) his breeder told me some of her hens have this "ring" also. Takoda was dna'd and is only just now getting his ring and he will be 2 in August.
