Hi I've become interested in the Port Licoln parrot but don't really know that much about it. I was wondering if anyone had these birds or had any experience with them??? What are they like as pet/aviary birds? Is there any specific facts/info about these birds I should kno about??? Thanks for any info you may want to share!! cheers

My experience with them is out in the field doing data collection on birds in certain areas many years ago. I do know that the wild ones don't like getting caught in nets, are very loud when P***** off, and hurt lots when they bite. Obviously no aviary experience from me with these guys.

The same applies to Port Lincolns as for Rosellas - see the Rosella thread.
Not a pet bird at all and need a good sized aviary to fly around in - around 4 x 1 metre minimum.
cheers,
Mike

Hahaha soooo true Mary. I've had quite a few 28s in as rescues and they are quite nutty. I know of a couple of guys in QLD who have breeding pairs, well 28s as opposed to port lincolns but they behave the same from what I've seen. I'll see what I can find out for you.

Many of the 28's sold through pet shops are legally caught wild birds from WA whose trapping is allowed under damage control orders around orchards. They are as wild in an aviary as in the wild and never satsifactorily quieten down. Always make sure any 28 is guaranteed aviary raised and doesn't go into a blind panic when anyone approaches the aviary.
Port Lincolns are not trapped, although shooting of them is sometimes (or was a few years ago) allowed in SA again for orchard protection. So any Port Lincoln purchased from any source SHOULD be captive bred. It also should not panic if you approach the aviary.
cheers,
Mike

I got an 07 bred Mallee Ringneck in February and while aviary bred & not much contact with me, he loves being called a Pretty Boy and bobs his head down. So for genuine aviary bred birds (PLP & MR related) they act the same as any other aviary bred parrot.
