Anyone care to comment on the bird shown in the photo - it was photo'd in Maleny, inland from the Sunshine Coast, in an area where the only Rosella species is the Pale-head Rosella, and is a regular visitor to the garden it was in. My bet is that it is a Pale-head and Crimson Rosella hybrid since the blue on the wings is so prominent. Possibly an escaped Crimson met up with a lonely Pale-head and this resulted. cheers, Mike

Looks like you'd be right Mike The paleheads who hang around my yard cause me a few lost toes by feeding my red rump and mulga (when I still had one ) hens. I'm sure they wouldn't hesitate to pick up a stray crimson hen.

Do you think rosella's can breed with king parrots?? Cos my mum gets king parrots and i think eastern rosellas and she said that there is a bird that looks like a king parrot but has some of the colours of the rosella that comes down and feeds in her bird feeder? I havent seen it yet but when i go down ill have a look and if it looks different ill try get a picture...is it possible cos she said there isnt many rosellas but there are lots of king parrots and this one looks like both.

The King parrot has been recorded by Sindel as hybridising with Crimson-wing, Superb, Princess, Crimson Rosella, the Green-winged and Amboinen King Parrots and remarkably the Rainbow Lorikeet. Since it has hybridized with the Crimson-wing it is possible I guess to also hybridize with the Eastern Rosella, but it appears never to have been reported. The Rainbow hbrid is quite remarkable - I hadn't heard of this until tonight - Sindel's book even has a photo of it and it looks much more like a Rainbow than a King Parrot. Must have been one mixed up bird cheers, Mike

Hmm Hybrids....probably best not to get me started. Yep I know (as demonstrated ) they can happen in the wild...and I think I'll stop there.

Yeah the king parrot/eastern rosella would be a wild hybrid but I can't wait to see it when i go down in june. Mum said there aren't many rosella's around but heaps of king parrots and this one flies down with the king parrots to feed but looks a bit like both apparently.
