hi all, After being in lurkdom and absent for sometime I am back and am enjoying reading the posts again.
For a while now I have been thinking of adding a Black too to the family and after "meeting" the most delightful babe a few weeks ago am in love.
the hubby has even started talking about building an aviary again, a project I thought long discarded and asking about sizes a black too would need. Wonders will never cease!
I see a few members here have Black toos and I would love to here your thoughts and experiences with feeding and behaviors.
This bird would mainly be housed in an aviary outside but would have a lot of house time.
I live in NSW so any experiences/info anyone can share with licenses would also be very interesting.
looking forward to hearing and learning from you all
Kind regards
sue

Hi Sue I adopted a red tail black cockatoo about 2 months ago now .... and in two words i'm going to say he is a "HAND FULL" and i'm also no pro on the breed If you live in the suburbs i wouldnt suggest pulling one outside in an aviary .... they end to cry out for attention ... which can then become a problem with neigbhours ... That is half the reason why i got given Jacko ... his owner didnt have enough time for him .. and he would cry out as soon as someone went out into the back yard .. On a good note ... they are an awesome pet .. if you only have 1 bird ... as they do end to wanna play and get into everything like a 2 year old human child I love having jacko ... he can be soo cuddly ... and soft to touch .... and cute to watch play .. Judy tho mite have some other things to add ... as she has had Jetta from a lot younger age then me with jacko .. I think with jacko i've just ended up with a naughty bird who wasnt taught anything ... so now we've had to try and go back to scratch with him .. But i wouldnt give him up for the world Hope that helps alittle bit ... if you think of any other questions you'd like ask feel free ..

Thanks for your reply Just4 birds. We live in the southern side of Sydney and even though we have neighbours there is a reasonable area where we dont back on to anyone. We work from home so would be able to give good attention but to encourage Independence as well, with foraging and enrichments to the environment. I have been reading about you and Jacko and he sounds a great bird. I look forward to following your progress with each other sue

hehehehe ... Yeahhh i love him ... not so sure about my fiance tho ... even tho jacko loves him to bits He is just like a kid when out ... he'll come sit on me ... climb down my arm ... to get on my desk ... and then he has to TOUCHHHHHHHHHH EVERYTHING ! ! ! I also forgot to say yesterday that yes you do need a licence ... you can print the form from online and then just fax it to them ... but it takes 21 days ... and you'll need that before you buy the bird If there is anything else you can think of that you would like to ask .... go right ahead ... i'm always about ... Or if you think you would like to see one in person and wanna drive out west give us a yell

Yes great to see you back Sue. I have wanted a black too since I was in my early twenties. But back then due to money (or lack of and the cost of a black too) I put it to the back of my mine. Then last year I thought ........ mmmmm maybe. But once again I have probably got to put it to the back of my mind as I work now. Only part time but I am away from home for about 6 hours of the day.

Oh I meant to say that it was my parents who inspired me into wanting a black too. I owned a white sulfer too at the time and my parents were telling me about a young handraised black too they met. They told me it was so cuddly and affectionate and was just like a real baby. I have also asked a few breeders what they are like as pets.......and they have all said a handraised one is a superb pet.

Thanks Tracy Yes this young one that I met was a delight. The blacks are my fav bird and I hope someone here can give me some "real life, everyday life" experiences and help me work out if this is a feasible option

I'm gonna sayyyyy Hand ful and alot of attention ... Though i have noticed my jacko is alot better to handle when i have him out by himself with just me ... He seems to go off and play by himself when its only me home .... but when my fiance is here ... it seems to hype jacko a lot more Ya should stop by sometime Sue .. or check out the black too's at kellyville pets or cyrstals pet and wire ... Also i believe the yellow tails can be biters .... along with the white tails ... *Lisa* ps i also now believe red tails are more of a hand ful then my eckies are

Thanks Lisa, I can well imagine they can be a 2yr old with wings I have been clicker training my IRN for a couple of yrs now and when he gets a little "above himself" we start a bit more What sort of a diet are you using with Jacko? I cook & chop for Bella but have read certain lists with chicken wings, and pinkie mice and 1 or this gum nut and 2 of that, so am interested in what others are doing. I use a lot of foraging with Bella & I am working on a new foraging tray with him( he is the toy tester for my bird toy line) & he really enjoying it so will be working on a big version for the new guy. Thanks for the info please keep it coming and kind offer. sue

Jacko is on a mainly sunflower seed diet .... plus alots of raw fruit and veg ... and defrosted frozen veggies .. Jacko loves peas The only meat my birds get is organic chicken when we have it ... sometimes the get the pork chop bone .. if they are out when i've finished my dinner I think if you are going to feed birds meat ... it has to be organic ... I cook veggies and grains/pasta for my eclectus's and sun conures .... i just mash it all up and mix it all together ... freeze it .... with jacko tho ... i have to give him more fatty foods cause he isnt weighting enough the vet said ... and i spoke to a breeder of yellow tails and he feeds his black too's mostly a sunflower seed diet ... btw ... i'd be interested in checking out some of your homemade toys .. *Lisa*
