Im new to birds and have a breeding pair of eclectus parrots that have just reached 1.5 years. I have noticed that each morning after feeding that they are trying to mate. I dont have a nest box as i thought they were to young to be trying to mate. Is this natural behaviour for parrots so young? Is there anything that i should do? Would really appreciate your feedback.

Hi jeanette and welcome. Wow, eclectus sure are a big way to venture into aviculture lol. This is just my personal opinion mind you. I would put in a suitable sized box for them, if for no other reason than for them to roost in over night, especially in winter. Eclectus usually start to breed from around 2 years old, 18 months isn't unheard of though (from friends experience). It certainly sounds like they have every need taken care of if they are that relaxed around you. Do keep in mind that these really are just adolescent birds and a lot of young parrots "practice" before getting serious about breeding. Good luck and keep us posted.

summit said vertually what I was going to say. I have a pair of ekkies. My female is 4 years old and my male is 3 years old. I have had the female since she was about 4 months old, whereas I have only had the male since January this year. They have laid 3 eggs which were infertile. I have seen them mating again.......my female is making up for lost time I think ;D
At 18 months they are really a bit young, but it is not unheard of either.
Oh I am not an expert either, I bought Skye as a pet but when her hormones kicked in at about 2 years of age she became terribly aggressive (which was quite a shock actually) so we built her a big aviary and looked for husband for her (these all took time and money) and eventually it all happened about 6 months ago. Skye is very happy and it looks like Gunny is too ;D
