Getting this over and done with... In a couple of weeks I will be doing a trip to Arthurs breeder to pick up a 6 month old male yellow crowned amazon. I got a phone call from Graham last week offering him to me as this young one is being a problem child. For some reason he's started playing with his wing feathers and as a consequence has now stuffed them. Graham feels he'd be better in a companion parrot situation where he'll get the attention, toys and boundaries that he needs. Obviously I'm the sucker he thinks will do this. (There was a few "why do you do this to me" comments from yours truly) It is odd for a bird so young to be dong this but looking at a few possble reasons. Raised as a single bird, not enough entertainment etc. I have spoken to a few people about this. I'm not paying full price nor am I getting this guy for free. It's certainly going to be an interesting challenge. I was considering a zon several months back but then decided to go for an Ekkie as my final large companion bird. Needless to say the Ekkie won't be happening now. So currently preparing Arthur for the arrival of a new room mate. The zon's cage should arrive in the next week so he'll have a little bit of time to get used to that being in the room and need to get another T stand as I can't expect Arthur to actually share. Should be fun and games but then I do put myself in these situations. Will get photos once the green boy is home. Still tossing up on names but will probably go with Bogart (Bogey) in the vain hope that he'll show some suave refinement. (Yeah right)

You will have your hands full, but what fun you will have. You're making me jealous! Good luck with it all, and hope it all works out.

Good luck with that Abby, keep us posted on how the feather destruction goes. I had a moluccan cockatoo that kept pulling his primary flight feathers out. Nothing I tried would deter him from those pesky long feathers. He was a really healthy bird, active and very social, he just hated those feathers.

That sounds exciting Mary, hope that Arthur takes it all OK. Is he used to meeting different birds?
I have absolutely no hands-on knowledge of Amazons, so look forward to hearing all about your experiences with one.
cheers,
Mike

Whilst he's used to the flock here and occasionally will come and check out the new babies he's been more human exposed then bird. He and Coco (corella) don't associate apart from him telling her to shut up. I'm hoping the cage gets here early this week so I can set it up for him to get used to. My guess is he's going to be snotty anyway as I'm away with Parrots2008 next weekend and it's the first time that he hasn't had me around. He's got a pretty good relationship with hubby though. I'll have a few days to suck up to him when I get back before I go and upset him again. It's really a case that I'm aware things may not go down well in the short term with him and deal with the tantrums as they crop up. Amazons are a bird that have captivated me for a couple of years now since meeting my first ones. I've been busily reading up and found a fantastic site that I'm using as a reference. Ordinarily I would have preordered a babe and had heaps of time to get prepared. Hasn't worked out that way this time. The main thing with the zon from talking to others and reading is very strict boundaries for behaviour from the start. They apparently go through a real nasty stage, but with boundaries in place this can be lessened. Also the importance of stick training whilst young to preserve hands for those potentially agro times. Thank goodness for 'too experience and body language reading lessons from Arthur. Yep This should be an interesting challenge, but I'm up for it.

It's good timing that the Amazon is coming after the Parrots 2008 conference. I am sure you will get a tremendous amount of useful hints about handling a head-strong bird from all the behavioural talks. I am sorry I won't be there but health issues made it impossible for me to go. However Bec (freder88) will be there both days and my wife (Judy Owen) on the Saturday so I will at least hear all about it from them.
Barbara Heidenreich especially was tremendous at the Convention in 2006 while Susan Freidman and Jim McKendry also have amazing insights into parrot behaviour.
cheers,
Mike

I need to corner Jim on a couple of things anyway (mainly the bird behaviour courses) so will add this one to the list. Was hoping to get Rosemary Lows Amazon book while I was up there too. ABK has it in their online shop so will with any luck have it at the trade table. Could you let your wife know that I'd love to catch up with her. I'll keep an eye out on the name tags. Thing is I'll probably look like some weird person looking at everyones chest. Ok we don't need to go any further on that topic...Tracey. Thank you Jane and everyone else for your faith in me.

Oi! If he offers you a macaw, tell him I'll have it!!! Lol! That's one I am getting when I move out, I want to do some work experience at perky parrots (hopefully if they let me) and get more hands on work. The only thing is they think the shoulder thing is bad but hey, it's their avairy, their rules, I'm ok with it.

I suspect if a macaw was on offer it would still cost alot and he'd be looking at someone with quite alot of behaviour experience. Good try Courtney.

Lol, that's why I am still living at home to get the $$$ saved up for acreage lol. Yes they're loud, VERY LOUD but not as repeatative as the hahn's macaws, they're like sun conures, but even louder in my opinion. But noise doesn't bother me lol that's why I want acreage. I don't think I would get one living in the suburbs...thats just mean to people LOL!
