;D, today i am goin to veiw a potential boyfriend for peanut, i have given up on her being a companion bird since she bit me so hard i bled profuseley for four hours from one finger!! so anyway, the little one isnt sexed but is lutino and hand raised, so if it happens to be a little girl and she is friendly enough i will pass her on to someone else that would like a hand raised lovie- unless she is a little terror then ill sell it as a breeder, i wont be putting them together for a while since this one is only young (just weaned) and i want to quarantine and get it sexed and vet checked before placing them together (because i know if i let them bond i wont be mean enough to seperate them again lol) mabye peanut will be a little mor sociable if she sees another lovie jumping all over me...

Ok so i got there today and was greeted by lots an lots of birds!! the breeder had lorikeets, teils and millions of lovies (fischers masks and peachfaces) all beautiful birds, none breeding cept the lovies (who werent supposed to be he didnt even have any boxes in the avairy) I had a look at the Lutino but it hadnt weaned yet and he didnt want to sell an unweaned bird- which i respect him for because i wouldnt sell an unweaned one either, im not going to be in perth for another 6 months and he had a couple of people interested in it that live closer so i decied against paying him to hold it. On the other hand.... yeh here it comes.... He had this gorgeous other little lovie who is the sweetest thing, not sexed but i really think it is a boy, he just loves people and doesnt like being locked in his cage at all if it turns out to be a female my bf has laid claim to it... he was the main reason i got it actually "butt meeegan your not going to be in perth again for soooo long and this one is soo cute and if it is a girl ill keep it!!" says the bf so i paid for it and now hes is home snuggling with the bird while reading a magazine.. mabye i will have a bit of trouble trying to take it home because he will try and smuggle it out. ;D Im not sure on the mutation it is a whiteface s mabye whte face aust cinnamon- it has pink toes but havent looked at the eye colour yet, could be just a split as it has some violet looking feathers in there (its sorta pied), ill post a pic and you can let me know what you think:)

Lets hope that the new one loves Peanuts and not your finger. Congratulations, it is so exciting getting a new bird.

Easy to sex. Place your finger up it's coight and if the pelvic bones are far enough apart to put your fingertip between then it's a girl. A boy will be closer together and you'll only be able to get a little of your fingertip between the bones. Nat sexed Sam at only 3-4weeks old before I brought him home & I did the coight test on him at 3 months old with the same result (he didn't enjoy it!).

You don't actually have to put it physically up the "coit" ;D you can just feel the pelvic area with your finger from the outside and if your finger fits between the bones or if there is a good size gap then the likely hood of it being a girl is good. If the gap is very small......then more than likely a boy.
Nat also showed me with a ringneck she gave to me. ;D

I just found out today that Male lovebirds have long tail feathers and females have short stubby tail feathers...is it true??? My Keiko has a long tail and Mardi has a short tail and I know Keiko is a boy...SO...

Feeling the pelvic bones is only useful when the bird is mature - for lovebirds at least 6 months. Both young hens and cocks usually have the bones close together and is is only as the hen matures that they can spread apart. Also they tend to be wider in a hen that is in a breeding cycle - a hen in the off season or moulting can have the bones close enough to cause uncertainty. Also a hen just caught and stressed can have the bones closed up and it is only aftyer holding her for a couple of minutes that she can relax enough to cause the bones to spread again.
It can be a useful technique - if the bones are far apart then it will be a hen, but if they are closed up then it may be a cock or a stressed hen or a hen not in breeding cycle.
I have never had much faith in the tail method of sexing - never seems to be reliable from my experience.
cheers,
Mike
