As far as I know Vankarhi Sorghum & Red panicum are different & I agree the birds don't like it. As far as I am concerned I think it is added to make up the weight. Galahs & sometimes Cockatoos like it in the addocks, whether they are extra keen when it is just producing the milk ( it's nice & soft before ripening) & isn't ripe or they love it at any stage I was raised on the land in New South Wales & we always called Sorghum -- Milo but I guess what ever it is, I am pretty sure it is not called Panicum

I was raised on the land in New South Wales & we always called Sorghum -- Milo but I guess what ever it is, I am pretty sure it is not called Panicum That's correct, sorghum and panicum are very different. Sorghum is a round medium sized, reddish seed, that only pigeons and doves like to eat. Parrots will only eat it when it is green or when it is sprouted. Panicum is a small seed used particularly in finch mixes. The presence of sorghum in a seed mix generally indicates a poor quality mix - sorghum is added by manufacturers because it is the cheapest and heaviest seed available - makes them more profit. I tackled the rep from a major seed manufacturer whose product is used extensively by bird keepers and is in all supermarkets and she readily admitted why they used it - to make more profit. Trouble is I've found that seed mixes with sorghum tend to also have other seed types with a low sprouting rate, meaning they are using old and cheap seed that is no longer viable - dead seed in other words. Fresh live seed has to be more nutritious so avoid mixes with sorghum. cheers, Mike

yes I also knew sorgum as milo ;D I was only going by the pictures I saw here that made me think that I might have been wrong and sorgum and panicum might have been the same......I used to by the larger parrot seed and my birds never ate the sorgum (red seeds) and it was such a waste. Then someone suggested to me to use small bird seed.......and I have ever since.

I had to buy seed today from Allora Grain & Milling ( AGM- 10 mins away) $18.50 for Finch mix, $16.80 for Wild bird mix, & $22.80 for Peachface mix. That's the price here but they have a warehouse in Springwood I didn't ask if the price increased when buying up but I can only guess it would a little All these bags weigh 25 kgs I know they will also sell per kg as well I can recommend their seed That is so cheap! We have been told about Allora. It is just a shame we are just a little too far away. But for sure, if we are ever up that way we will call in and get some. (Thinking I might need that semi-trailer)

I don't buy bird seed but but ingredients from Kakulis sisters and sprout a mix that includes legumes. My mix is, adzuki beans, lentils, mung beans, chickpeas, wheat, buckwheat, barley, also organic spinach, radish, fenugreek, alfalfa, mustard seeds, at various times and proportions. I prefer to buy human grade food for my cockie.

I use Avi Grain Peachface and for 20 kg I pay $26.50. The price has come down a lot over the last 2 years. The budgie seed I use seems to have a lot of panicum but it seems to get eaten. We used to give our large parrots more sunflower seeds, but I had to take the Crimson Rosella to the vet and he told me he was too fat!!!! So now they only get what is in the Peachface mix.
