I have a Indian ring neck and he is the sweetest most wonderful bird that anyone could hope to have. I've been so worried about him latley though. I think he minght be plucking. I'm not positive that this is the case or not but hhe is losing quite a few feathers on his chest and neck could someone tell me when Ringnecks start to go through their first molt. I was thinking he may just be molting but I'm not sure he is about 6 months old.

Oh Patricia I don't know sorry but I'm sure someone will be along soon who does know. I'm not even sure if IRNs are prone to plucking

I can't say that any of my ringnecks have plucked themselves in anyway. So I am not much help to you. I did have a galah once that plucked himself, but I sent him to live with my brother for a few months whilst we were moving and getting settled, he started plucking himself, but then when we got him back he started growing his feathers again - I think his was a "stress related pluck". Birds can be so tempremental at times, just keep an eye on him, if you think that he is plucking himself and not just loosing the feathers - try and occupy his time with something else. I give my ringnecks small branches just to chew and destroy - they love it. Good luck, hope everything works out for you.

Hey Pat I would get him checked by the vet, just to be sure, it could be a number of things....illness, boredom, moulting, mites etc. Ease your worries and get him checked out - no point in guessing! I don't think it'a anything fatal...but may be, if you don't attend to it. I learnt the hard way, trust me

it could be a bad moult.......some of my alex's look "ugly" when they moult. But if you are really worried.....get it checked out by a vet like Kat suggested.

From memory you are from North America, so now - summer - is moult time. Ringnecks can look pretty messy during the moult but after 4 to 6 weeks come out if it looking as magnificent as ever.
A photo would help but from the sounds of it probably just a moult going on.
cheers,
Mike

Like people have said - it could be a moult, but if you're unsure and worried about it get it checked out by a vet, if only for piece of mind.
With Jedi, they confirmed that she was destroying her feathers (although I already knew she was) by taking a sample of poop and having a look with a microscope. Because she was actually chewing them not just pulling them out and dropping them there were bits and pieces in the poop.

Well I thank you for all your responces I think that he was just missing his cluch mates because as soon as he made friends with my Cockateils he was fine again and all his feathers are beautiful again. I also started bathing him daily that could have been it also but what ever started him plucking in the first place is no longer an issue. thanks for trying to help

Awwww, he sounds adorable. Very loving - that's all it was - just needed more love. Maybe I should start plucking myself - see if I can get some love!

Happy to see he is fine now. But do be prepared for feather loss when he is moulting. Takoda is losing feathers now......again. lol
