Just been a bit curious....been reading up about cockatoos, SC mainly, and read how demanding they are. People who have pet cockatoos, do they still manage to have other tame/companion birds or are these type of birds more for people who don't keep other tame birds? Do cockatoos get along with other tame/companion birds or are they deffinatelly "me only" birds.? Are cockatoos better suited a single person or a family? cheers for that

I have a red tail black cockatoo ...... and i'd have say cockatoos after reading someone elses posts on another forum about there adopted SC and my own ... they are a HANDFUL ! ! ! ! ! ! and alot like a human 2 year old .... and well i guess if you can manage your time well then you can have a `too and other birds .... and as for birds being a one person bird other a family person bird .. it will depend on how its raised and how people handle the bird and how often .... a bird doesnt really like one sex more then the other sex because of the sex of the bird ... its whatever sex the bird has more confidence/trust in ..... like my black `too would always go to my fiance ... as he come from a male owner before me ... but i just started having the bird out when i was home by myself so he had to rely on me ... and now he is quiet happy to hang with me more then my fiance and i'd have to say i seriously wouldnt put a SC `Too in a suburb area .... some maybe be quiet enough ... but mostly they are not ... and neighbours complaint and well then the bird has to go most of the time *Lisa*

I owned 2 sulfers about 20 something years ago, plus I had a galah for 15 years (she died about 3 years ago). I found them to be very loud. I had to keep the toos (not galah) inside and covered until about 8am in the mornings so the neighbours didn't complain about them. I used to let them out to strutt their stuff around the yard daily ......... I also did not own 2 of them at the same time either. My first one chewed my ex husbands stereo system cabinet and unfortuneatly he did not see the funny side to it and made me sell him. I then got another one........and he chewed anything he could get his beak on and I made a few emergency trips to the upholsters to get things repaired before the ex husband came home. Unfortuneatly I didn't clip his wings properly ........ they were due for a clip so I didn't clip him in time and he flew away one day while strutting his stuff around the yard. My German shepherd (dog I owned at the time) barked at something (not the 'too) but frightened the 'too and I never saw him again. I then got the galah about 1 year later and she was much quieter, less destructive and sllightly smaller so a little cheaper to accomodate with toys and cages. She also loved to strutt her stuff around the yard too......... The bigger birds are more work, more expensive, quite often a lot louder. The other thing is........your 5 year old will tire of the bird. Trust me, he will. We got Caillean a handraised budgie........we take him out of the cage most of the time now and I clean his cage and feed him etc. I don't mind...........I let him get the bird knowing full well I would probably end up looking after it........I wanted Caillean to have a bird and be able to learn to look after it. He does take him out of the cage and if I ask him to clean things he does try and Caillean is only 6 years old. I should say that I am partial to the medium/larger birds though, but I do know they are very intelligent and they must have out time and I do think they are too much work for a 5 year old. If he really wants a bird, show him some cute baby budgies or lovies, or teils or even green cheeks......they are a smaller bird and if they bite they can't normally take half your face off ...... I hope this makes sense. But if YOU really think YOU could handle a BIG bird like this ....... then get it and let your little boy help you look after it under your supervision.......but it is YOUR bird not his.

Thanks HEAPS Tracey! So I see you saw my post in the confessions lol...yeah, the more I read, the more I have made up my mind. I have the email ready now and waiting, to tell the lady I will decline. I feel real stupid as I showed such interest in the 'too but when my "bird frenzy" and "good price offers" get together - I kinda loose it ...and my common sense stops working. I came here just for one last check for any more replies, before I decide to send the email but now I am definite. A attention needing suuni is as far as I could go with demanding birds....otherwise things would get too much for me, kids, house, dog, current birds etc. I want to stick with my original plan anyway. So thanks everyone, for your input! The high need for daily excercise and destroying everything would be too much for me (oyur dog does enough destroying already - a 10 month old german shepherd), that kinda bird would suit me if I was rich and single and had plenty of spare time lol lol ...and no other birds lol My son is now happy with the idea of getting a blue (black masked) lovebird ....(no influence by me, on the choice of colour...I swear ) ....if he stops caring for him, I'll be glad to take over, with not too much extra work added. ;D

Yeah MUCH appreciated Tracey!!! I am soo glad I didn't go ahead with it. It taught me a lesson, not to jump on things so quickly and make promises to people that'll I'll buy things etc...and actually stop and think about it, .....I do it far too often...I think I can afford this and that...or manage that and this etc etc....in the bird world, I am defrfinatelly a "time waster" lol

I really dislike that term 'timewaster'. It's used so rudely sometimes on petlink. If I'm going to get a bird I want to be sure of the price, what environment it's coming from, how tame it is etc etc...and I won't settle until I'm 100% sure on it. So I guess I'm a 'timewaster'. I think it's better to be a timewaster than unprepared though.
