My 6 yr old daughter came with me today when I took a bird (named Pogo) to a guy that wanted to buy him. He arranged for me to drop the bird off at his work place which is the local butcher shop. My daughter has never been inside the butchers so it was all new to her. I stood at the door and sent her in to ask for the guy to come out to get the bird, which she did, he came out with her and she stood quietly while he paid for the bird and transfered it to his cage and then we left as he took the bird around to his car. My daughter started asking me "Mum what was all that meat doing in the shop, was it all animals cut up?" I said 'yes, thats what they do at butcher shops, cut up aniamls for us to eat.'
Baaaaaad move, miss 6 erupted into hysterical screams and before I new it was trying to open the car door, I stopped the car and she bolted out the door and started running back towards the shop screaming "I don't want them to eat Pogo" poor kid probebly needs counselling now, I had to show her that the guys car had gone because he had taken him home, she's quite traumatised and I'll be much more carefull what I say from now on.

I think you might be right she tells me she is not eating her chicken and vegie pie for dinner and only wants Broccoli and peas from now on, a bit of a limited diet so I hope she gets over it soon.

Ok she was still upset this morning so we took Bills advise, and rang the new owner and arranged to show her the bird. She beleives us now and is much happier ;D however she is now worried about every sheep and cow she sees, defanantly a new vegitarian here.

Even though I'm not a parent, I can appreciate how difficult it must have been for you. I'm glad to hear that it has all worked out for the best. ;-)
