Hi all,
Just thought Id put an update on whats breeding at my place at the moment. I have a pair of maroon bellied conures on 9 eggs, Quakers started laying and Plumheads on eggs.
The maroon bellies have surprised me by laying 9 eggs, as I was expecting 7 at most. I will no doubt have to pull a few for handrearing.
The Quakers and plumheads have just started laying.

If they all hatch, would you take the older ones or the younger ones for handrearing? I would say the older ones as they would be easier. But I am not sure.

Take out the older ones - the parents do a much better job of raising very young babies than we do. About 2 weeks old would be ideal. At that age they are down to 4 or maybe 5 feeds a day - based on my Green-cheek experiences.
cheers,
Mike

Hi Pied,
I have a pair of Eckies on two eggs, Quakers, plumheads on eggs and the maroon bellies should have chicks, but I have left them alone for a fair while. I can hear feeding going on in the nest, but I dont want to disturb them just yet. I will check over the weekend.
Hopefully we will have some chicks soon. Majors are going in the box also, but dont expect them to lay this year.
Thanks Shaun

I checked the maroon bellies today and they have one chick and 8 eggs still. I may pull the chick for handrearing if others hatch soon. It is hard to check them as they are in the box most of the day. They are never out together at the same time.
Ihavea report on the eckies which I will put under the photo section. It is not the report I was hoping to post.

Good news to hear they have a chick hatched Parents sound like they're good also with not leaving the nest unless there is someone there....

They are doing really well. The guy I bought them from said they raise most of their chicks on their own. I will check them again in a few days.

I have taken the chick for handrearing. I decided to rear ir to give the hen a chance to incubate the rest of the eggs. I will post photos and a report soon.

It is going well. I have given it 2 feeds so far. It weighs 17 grams and am guessing it is about 10 days old. Looks healthy and alert.
