Does anybody know much about this parrot in aviculture? I have not been able to find alot of info on this species besides it is endangered in the wild. It is an australian parrot.
I hadnt seen this parrot before, until seeing it in the 2009 parrot Society calander. It is an awsome looking parrot and would like to know if it is bred in aviculture.
Thanks Shaun

good luck, none in captivity in Australia at all. Only states with even a chance of it being in private hands (if ever) are SA and maybe WA

There are none in Australian captivity, and possibly none elsewhere in the world. Attempts were made in the past to keep some at Taronga Zoo, but they proved very difficult, and didn't survive for long.
cheers,
Mike

Thanks for the links Robert. I wonder why the society would tease me like that if they aren't available?? They are a nice looking bird. What makes them hard to keep? Besides the dying bit. Thanks Shaun

I am pretty sure there are a few of the PNG species floatinga round in asian zoo's. There may well be - the species has 15 subspecies according to Forshaw, only one of which occurs in Australia. Several of these subspecies in Papua-New Guinea and Indonesia are common, and it wouldbe surprising if some had not been collected for overseas zoos and breeders. I was only talking about the Australian subspecies, Geoffroyus geoffroyi maclennanicheers, Mike

They are a nice looking bird. Perhaps it is too cold for them in winter down south. You would think they might be kept in Queensland aviaries. Maybe you could search for bird shops/breeders on the internet in the northern states.

I've only seen this beauty in my bird books but never actually in real-life. It said in the book, they are quite rare etc.....so I didn't even bother searching Petlink ;D Pity....they are gorgeous! I wonder why there are so difficult keeping in captivity?
