So, went round to see Jules today (HI JULES ) and she is thinking maybe a Silver Eye, maybe the white around the eyes will come later on when it gets a bit older. So, we are getting there! Im so suprised to find someone on here that lives across the oval from me! I am on another music forum, and allof my really good friends on there live on the other side of the country! What are the odds! Thanks everyone for your advice, and especially thanks again to Jules

Hey Sairs, wonderful to meet you and Echo I was talking to another carer today and described your little bird. I told her it looked just like the cuckoo I had but more green and she said some are more green than others and that it sounded like a cuckoo, which was my first thought. So there you go, it's a bronze cuckoo ;D just like the pic we looked at. Did you manage to find any live mealworms in amongst the bran? I know my lil cuckoo LOVED them.

This is so hard to type here, but about two days ago my darling bird was squashed by his box of feed. I had him in a box to take to my sons school for news, but when I put his box of food in there, to take to show the kids, I mustve accidently put it ontop of the bird and when I got home I found him. He breathed his last breath as I took the box off him. To say im sad would be an understatement. I was this little darlings Mum and I failed him. I shouldve looked properly when I put the box in and through my own error he died. I am absolutely devestated, and feel like such a failure to him. I dont know if this has ever happened to anyone else here, but the guilt I feel is indescribable. Even looking at the pictures ive put up here is so hard

This is so sad ,sairs82. You are not alone in going through this. I have done the same too. It is just hard to talk about it. Clearly you have a way with animals. Please do not let what happened, put you off helping animals. Especially with the smaller birds, one has to always be carefull. What this little bird taught you, hopefully will help you go on to help other animals. Best Robert and Precious

Oh no Sairs. I think we have all done something like that at some time so try not to be too hard on yourself though I know that's hard. You did a wonderful job with him.

Best Robert and Precious Thank you for your kind words, Robert and Precious. I have never felt like this before, I only had the birds for a week and a bit - but the sadness I feel is a shock to me. Is this they way for everyone? The attatchment I felt to this bird has really suprised me, I didnt know how upset id be...has anyone else gone through similar? Does that mean that youve accidently squashed a bird too?? I miss him so much, and his relatives are flying around outside and their call always makes me think of him

Sairs - it is very sad, but try not to beat yourself up too much over it. Unfortunately it is very easy for accidents to happen when it comes to caring for birds - from accidentally letting them go when changing food/water to squashing them, metal poisoning etc...most everyone here has probably had a situation if not entirely like yours then one where they felt they could have done something different that would have saved the bird.
Don't let it put you off though - you did a great thing trying to care for this little guy. A lot of people would have either left him or simply not noticed, and chances are if you hadn't come across him he would have had a longer and far more painful death.
Big hugs to you. I won't say don't feel sad, because that never works. I hope that you remember the good things more than the bad during this experience though.

That is such a sad thing to have happen. Like everyone one else has said, try not to be too hard on yourself. After all it was an accident, accidents happen in everyday life. You gave it your best shot. Chalk it up as a lesson learned and you will become a more experienced person for it. Best wishes your way

Very sad for your loss, as others have said we've all done something we've regretted. As Robert said, the little one has taught you about caring for something so small. You could always try yourself out as a small bird rescuer and carer. Plenty of little ones needing attention especially this time of the year.

I am so sad for you Sairs. Yes some of us here have accidently squashed birds or lost them etc and it is normal for us to beat ourselves up. But you need to know that it was an accident and that little bird had a great life with you that he probably wouldn't have had otherwise, no matter how short it was..........it was a great life.

Sairs, Dont beat yourself up over it, when i first started caring for sick and injured/orphaned wildlife i made sooo many mistakes, not many resulted in death but a few did, it is a harsh learning curve but dont let it put you off, just try to think of the little joys you had while caring for your little bub, they will happen with other critters too, wether they be birds or not. If you want to learn more you can enrol in a WIRES course and then you can look after all sorts of wildlife. im sure down your way there would be plenty of little ones needing help all year round. I have lost many many baby birds that i have tried to raise, sometimes they just cant be helped. Atleast you tried your hardest with this little one, Mabye if you give it another shot you can do things better as you will have learned from your mistakes. You have gained experience now and next time it wil be far less stressful. So sorry to hear of your loss, but hopefully in the future you will have many more succeses
