I am caring for two baby birds that we found yesterday in their nest, on the ground. We put the nest back in the tree and kept an eye on it all day, but the mother never came back, and due to the fact that it was getting cold, we have taken them in. The Vet is unsure about what type of bird it is, all that we have established is that they are insectivors. Does anyone know???

tHey are Noisy Minors 80% sure very hard to tell from such a young age, you hsould be feeding them on a mix of 50% Kanagroo Mince 25% Wombaroo Insectivore Mix, 2 raw eggs, and some water to desired consitency, feed them 6 times a day between 6 am and 11pm.

Thanks for that...yes, we are finding it hard to tell what they are, they are still a little bald and only pin feathers, but the small amount of colour that is on them is an olive greeny colour. I have been feeding them Wombarroo Insectivor Mix with just water, im using a syringe. Are they too young to be feeding on mince? Do I mix it up thin enough so I can get it in the syringe? Ive never cared for birds before but am willing to learn and hope I can do an okay job at raising these little guys. Any advice would be very much appreciated

I dont think we get Noisy Miners here in W.A, so am now thinking they might be Silver Eyes...can any one help me with this? Ive never cared for birds before and need some advice.
I talked to a carer, and she recommended feeding every half hour but not during the night.
Id appreciate ANY advice.

Regardless what I feed them, do I sterilise the feeding equipment before and after every feed? And with the Insectivor mix and eggs, is that mixture good for a day? Or should I make up a fresh batch every time? They only eat a tiny bit each feed.

Yep you'll have to keep everything sterile, and try to only make up what you'll feed each meal. I that'll be miniscule but you'll get a feel for it

thank you...ive just grabbed 95 cents worth of mince from the Butcher and mixed some egg and the Insectivor Mix to form a paste like mix, and they took that okay One of the two is smaller and has less feathers on it, so im assuming that it hatched after the bigger one? Is it common for one of the two to be weaker and/or die? Just wondering, if this might be the case?

Sairs, i reckon definantly myna birds, (minor or however u spell it ) What Ben said to feed them is spot on. Look for the little olive green/grey backed, dirty white breasted and yellow beaked noisy little birds that hang around- they are the minor birds
i often blend up some meal worms with the feed too just for a boost (p.s DONT tell mum i use her blender for these things, she would not appreciate me blending maggots, mealies etc in there lol i do disinfect it though lol) Where abouts are u in W.A if you get into a situation where you cannot raise them i might be able to come and pick them up, otherwise im sure a rescue centre will take them
im suprised the parents didnt come back- the families feed all the babies, doesnt matter wether they are theres or not.
Until they feather properly we wont knwo fo sure- sometimes they are a bit hard to tell! If they are minors though they are friendly little chaps and are quite easy to release:)

Thanks for your advice!! I thought we didnt get them in WA??? But when I looked up Noisy Miners on Wikipedia, they looked similar Im down south western australia, in Donnybrook. The little guys are soooo cute, and they are just learning to walk a little, only a step or two...they open their eyes a tiny bit, and the bigger one sits there after his feed and ceeps a little bit....so cute Where do you get Meal Worms from? Can I just dig around the dirt for some? I have a blender too

Ok I have just read this........so ignore my suggestion of dropping the mince in the previous post you have (what do I know ;D )
You do need to keep the utensils clean. I use boiling water to clean mine before and after each feed. I also make a fresh batch for each feed.

well, we lost one of the babies, but the one we have now is very strong and growing every day. It has now discovered how to jump and flutter up to my hair and loves sitting with us on the couch It is very olive green with a white chest and light brown feathers on either side of the white underneath. Still not sure what it is?

this isnt the best photo, but it was when I went to feed him and I found out he could climb up onto his box. The teddy I have for him there is because his sibling died and I thought he might like it to cuddle up to. I cant believe how attatched you get to these little fellas...they are so full of personality and really just so gorgeous. Ive heard you cant release Insectivors once you have hand raised them, is this true? I would love to be able to release him back into the wild, but unsure?

OMG that is such a tiny and cute baby bird. I am sorry I have no idea what it is, but you have done a great job of raising it.
Yes I put teddies and toys in with my bubs too....especially if they are on their own.

Thank you so much I must admit, I was a bit taken aback with some of the reponses I received after telling people I had taken in two baby birds...everyone told me it had a low success rate and that baby birds are really hard to raise! And all of what they told me was correct, thats why im probably the most suprised out of everyone, because we have one healthy, happy bird with us! And ive never raised a baby animal before, except maybe a kitten, but not on this scale of feeding every half hour... Im meeting Silvercloud tomorrow and see if she can shed some light...ive seen alot of these birds around this area and because she lives just around the corner, maybe she will know what they are Small world
