Hi All, I'm another new member to this site. I guess I feel a little intimidated after looking over the - Aussie Birds site for the last hour or so. To be amongst all of these expert bird lovers and carers and I being such a novice. However having said that I noticed many of you have greeted new members with warmth and enthusiasm. Over the years I have had a few birds namely Bourkes/Bar shouldered,Emerald,NG Ground doves and Cockateils.I had a holiday for the first time in 30 years and the few birds that I did have some one decided to let them out. As I mentioned that I was a novice and would like to take up this hobby again. The aviary I have is approx 6m x 1.8 x 1.8 partially enclosed at one end.I would like to try some of the above birds again along with Long Tailed Finches. How many pairs would be comfortable in this area? I live in Glenorie NSW and I'm finding it difficult to source quality birds with in 20 km -any suggestions? Thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings. Pete

Hi Pete
Welcome to the Forum, I'm sure you will enjoy your stay here.
The closest pet shop I know of to you is Kellyville Pets on Windsor Road in Kellyville. It is one of the largest shops for bird sin Sydney and had a good selection of birds last time I was there a couple of years ago. I don't know any breeders but there are several clubs i the Sydney area.
As for numbers of birds, I generally work to a stock rate of one pair of finches to 1 cubic metre, and 1 pair of small parrots (Bourkes, cockatiels etc) to 2 cubic metres. Your aviary has a volume of around 18 cubic metres so that means 18 pairs of compatible finches, or 10 pairs of finches and 4 pairs of small parrots, or whatever combination works in that volume.
cheers
Mike

G'day Pete and welcome! Please don't feel intimidated, I doubt any of us consider ourselves to be experts - to be honest I don't think such a thing exists. I reckon I won't stop learning about these wonderful feathered friends of ours until the day I die - and even then I would miss out on soo much knowledge. Ask any amout of questions you like, we guarantee we will answer them to the best of our ability. Enjoy your stay here too - we try not to take ourselves too seriously.

Hi Pinkdevil, Where I live I am blessed with a multitude of wild birds but it's always good to have some at the back door. Checked out your web site to find another passion, however I'll start with the birds. Regards Pete

Hi and welcome Pete. Please don't feel intimidated, we don't bite (hard) ;D LOL. We were all novices once but I agree with Karen, we keep learning all the time no matter how long we've been addicted to these feathered beauties.
