Some time ago, someone,(think it was farsseker) mentioned about the bean sprouts ,you can get from Coles or Woolworths.Bought the Bung Bean Sprouts, recently and Precious loves them. Also bought figs for him.Made sure they had no preservatives.I took the insides out. Precious loved the figes, too. from Robert and Precious. Thankfully this has happened, as I have not been successfull at growing my own sprouts for Precious. Also have tried to grow wheat grass. again not successfull. The old adage.Try ,Try again. from Robert and Precious

Wow, those sprouts and figs are really good for birds as well. I think it's a miracle Precious loves them! Has she ever tasted them before? I need to see if Bicki likes them!
With the world in a global economic crisis at the moment, Bicki needs to eat a variety of things! Especially things grown out the back!

Robert, My birds get soaked seed every day along with fruits and vegetables. They all love the soaked seed. I soak sunflower, hulled oats and used to soak mung beans, but they didnt like them. Soaked seed is the same as sprouted isnt it?

Mine love mung beans.......mine just love FOOD lol even the canaries and budgie get excited when I give out the fresh stuff every morning and afternoon.
My understanding is sprouted seeds are excellent when they are just sprouting.

I am just about eaten alive by some of my birds when I am giving them their fresh food. Even the shy ones are still watching every move I make until the food is there - and then as soon as I am out - they pounce on it.

Hi Robert, Several years ago, I found a link to a photo album that shows how to sprout seed using pictures. Good site! community.webshots.com/album/43562265ONBfPP Fresh seed will sprout much better than older seed. Found that out the hard way! My Abyssinian Lovebirds need figs as part of their daily diet. They have a higher calcium requirement than other species of lovebird and that's what figs provide. I got tired of paying a premium price for whole figs so I found a place out of California, USA that sells fig paste. It's simply the inside of the fig minus the outside shell.

The skin of a fig is not harmful. My lovebirds just won't eat it. If I'm feeding whole figs, I cut them in quarters so there's less waste. Fig paste has been a real godsend to me!!!!!!
In addition to my lovebirds devouring the figs, I have a Princess of Wales parakeet that will do just about anything for a fig!

I wish Sam would eat more vegies. The only vegie he adores is corn. I give him corn, celery, carrot, mung beans, silverbeet + whatever else I give the aviary birds and he bites each item - not eating any - then proceeds to put it in his water making a vegie soup, then he won't drink the water because it's soiled! If you are sitting near him drinking from a can he tries to throw said vegie (and seed) into the can. He missed the opening in my fathers can by 1cm one time so father keeps his can well away from Sam's cage.

Hope Sam is now eating more vegies,Karen.Precious got stuck into a fig this morning. He loved it. Also found out he loves grapes too.He likes corn too.Am inclined to think he treats the corn as a toy, as well as food. from Robert and Precious
