Hey all! Do you remember that website, www.wrightslittlewonders.com? Well I recently received my order from them. Here are some new props I bought: These new props have motivated Bicki and I to train! He's already gotten used to the ring toss and basketball. Just need to get him used to the rest. The puzzle is a little big for him lol.. but I have my alexandrian parakeet! So yeah, these were pretty cheap, they cost me about $35 US including postage and handling. Our dollar is pretty low right now though. I hope to teach Bicki colour coordination!

That is so coooool. You are very patient and understanding - I have been trying to toilet train Chuckles and I have to say, it works most of the time, but we still have our slip ups.

It is the first thing I do when I get Chuckles out of her cage. I open the cage, walk away, and she flies to me, then we walk straight to the bin, I hold her on my fingers (which is a hard task with toes missing) and then I "TAP" her on her lower back - and voila - out it comes. If she doesn't need to go, she usually looks up at me and says "AARGGHH". So I feed her then, we play, she has a fly around, and then after a little while, I try again. As I said, it works most of the time, but she still poops when she wants to.

Sometimes just sitting on our shoulders is all we can expect from our birds. If I have a bird like that then I just accept it.......it is still enjoying being with me and that is all that matters. But hey maybe the more you handle your lovie.....maybe he will eventually become more handleable???

momo- when did you get your lovebird? Since it was a baby? My bond with my alexandrian parakeet is not as strong as with my lovebird. As vankahari said, sometimes just sitting on our shoulders is all we can expect from our birds. Excpet, I'm scared of having my parakeet on my shoulder!! So he just sits on his perch and shares fruit with me. That's all I can do with him. Tell me if your bond with your lovebird increases. I would love to know how you did it!!

Ive had elmo since she was about 2/3 months old, shes about 9/10 now. We are bonded in the sense of.. i can not leave the room to go to the toilet with out a flock call from her, which I think is adorable.
recently ive been allowed to pat her back, to only realise, it was her thinking I was going to mate with her. so everytime I go near her now, she keeps asking me to mate..
the "breeder" i got her from used to force handle her too much, because she got a bit skittish and thats where her fear of hands come from.
bicki, can you "pat" your lovie? also.. for your training book do you need to "pat" them. i have gotten elmo to turn around for millet. thats his only cute little trick.. beside making me bleed hahahaha.

Oh lol that's different but interesting.
Yes I can pat Bicki, he likes being scratched under his beak or around his neck. He especially loves kisses on his back.
In my training book, you don't need to pat them. It's just good that they are used to hands. I think that if you're able to teach your bird to turn around, then you should be able to teach it other things.
I think you should get your bird to know that hands are full of rewards. It's a shame that your breeder force handled her too much... because usually young birds will associate hands with food and therefore love your hands very much.
So maybe you could give her treats when your hand is close and doesn't bite or something. Just try to make her love your hands...

I used to be able to feed her from my hands when she was younger. I forced handled her for the first few days I've had her and never since after reading forums about birds. The only time I really need to grab her is, if she gets her balls stuck on her head.. or I need to clip her toe nails. They grow really fast because she spends most of her time on carpet and not on tree branches.
Before I was able to feed her from my hand, and then she would just begin to try to bite my hands. I just accepted it as a thing that she does. I got her to turn around by getting her to follow the millet in a circle. After a day or so, she cottoned on to what needs to be done to be given millet. I started to clicker train her, but she hates the sound and protests everytime I click. But I dont think there is anyway i can get her to put a ball in the basketball hoop by following millet. lol!!
I am really interested in your book, but if I need to be able to use fingers. I prefer to keep 10 fingers hahahahhaa!!!! I think she's vampire sometimes the way she me and my mum bleeeed...

Lol! Well I really want to help you out with your bird's fear of fingers.... Is your bird scared of anything? (besides fingers) that it is too scared to attack?
My bird is scared of apples. So if he does something naughty... he gets to see an apple.

I wouldn't say she is scared at all.. she shows no fear towards anything.. she just bites them straight away. i assume its out of fear of being grabbed. But elmo will run across the floor if we are playing there TO bite my toes.. specifically to bite my toes or fingers..
I'm not sure if she just enjoys the reaction.. even when I am putting food in her bowl, I know she knows I am putting food in, but has this.. obsessive compulsive need to bite them hahaha.
that's funny about your lovie and apple! of all things to be afraid of. it's very cute.
