Hello All I am new to this forum but I am interested in getting a Ringneck. But I have a cat and 2 dogs, I dont think the dogs would be a problem but the cat might. Do you guys have other animals with your birds? and are you able to keep the "peace" so to speak in your household? I live in brisbane and would love to know of some great breeders in my area one that hand raise there babies etc. Also I don't know a hole lot about them so any info would be great! Thanks

Welcome Katherine. Yes a lot of us have other pets and birds. I have owned cats in the past. I choose not to own one now ........ not for any other reason except I enjoy the native wildlife and I get upset when my cats in the past would kill them. I own 2 dogs .... a border collie and a staffy. The collie is ok with the birds but the staffy is very movement orientated and cannot be trusted with most other animals.

Hi katherinebell I have a cat and dogs and fish and guinea pigs and reptiles and.....the list goes on and on lol Also have ringies. I have 4 lutinos that I handraised this year and my Spongie, (she had splayed legs but all better now . I have Spongie and the Lutinos in side at the moment. The cat doesn't really bother them but if they are out having a fly around, she gets an evil look in her eye, so I usually lock her in a room or when she is outside tethered, so the birds can have their time out, then when the birds are back safely away in their cages, I let the cat back out. My cat is an indoor cat but I do have her outside on a leash so she can not harm any birds etc. Have done this with her since she was a kittne and she always races to her leash when she wants to go outside lol. Hope you have success in finding yourself a great IRN. What colour are you planning on getting?

Hi Katherine, welcome to the wonderful world of Aussie Birds. I have a few ringnecks........mmm......lets see....last count.......12. Two of these are hand-reared. They make an excellent pet. I find what you put into them, is what you get out of them.

thanks for the replies guys. I had a talk to my family but they said no but I am going to persuade them its not hard haha
I really want a green one with a dark ring, if I am correct the males get the ring around the neck at about 2 years of age?
Anyway are they a noisy bird? because thats what my family is worried about, we used to have cockatiels and they are noisy!!!
And how messy are they? if I just had one. Do they make a lot of mess with the bird seed? my mum is a clean freak! and she hates how the bird seed falls on the ground. But I suppose they would eat fruit and stuff.

Yeah, they are a bit noisier than tiels I'm afraid. But mainly if they are bored or lonely. So if you provide a large cage with plenty of things to do and see, I can't really see noise as much of a problem, with mine anyway. Mine like to play the "throw food on the floor and watch you clean it up to do it all over again" trick. But I have now put a cage tidy thingy, (you know those material garter type things that go around the base of the cage?). I find that stops alot of seed and fruit being slung around. I feed mine a mixture of seed, pellets, fruit, veg, sprouted seed and sprouts. Mine have access to seed and pellets 24/7 and fruit/veg is given once a day. The males are the ones that get the black ring around the neck, although the girls do get a faint darkish green looking ring around their neck to. Usually around the second or third moult the boys will start to show their ring, so the 2-3 year mark, mostly around 2. Here is a few links to my ringies WBoyJasperand one I handraised last year.... green chick
