Hi all
I was just wondering what is the usual/normal behaviour/character of a tame indoor-kept Indian Ringneck.
My Barney likes to come out of his cage but he prefers to sit on my shoulder or sit on top of one of the other birds' cages rather than allow me to pat him. I know this is usual for ringnecks but I was just wondering, if this could affect his tame-ness.
I was told that in order to keep an IRN tame, he must be handled lots, in his first year - so therefore, should I force to handle him or if I let him do his own thing, will he still stay tame?
*He does like the odd pat though, he's not a total "pat-hater".
Thanks for any advice you can offer!

Mylo prefers to hang around my shoulder and loves to sit and curl up on my hand while l watch TV or am on the Computer. In her first year l spent 3-4 hours everyday and all weekend..hang on still do..lol.. Thou on weekends she isn't a morning birds and prefers to stay in the cage till about 11am guess she wants time out as well.Mylo doesn't like pats thou loves scratches around the back of her head and around her face. She like's to just to hang around my avairiy roofs as well and as long as we can see or hear each other there is no problem. If l am in the garage and Mylo is outside and she hasn't seen me for a few minutes she will call out in which then l go and see her, guess birds do this in the wild also. Indianringnecks aren't the most socialble birds but are happy you are just there,l don't force anything towards her if l need something like her to come back ..l use Peanuts to entice her So handling yes but not fulltime as long as you are there together for eachother, l have found it's fine.

Hi Greg, I forgot to ask....did you mean, that you spent 3 - 4 hours handling Mylo or as you mentioned, where she would sit on your shoulder or be somewhere where she can see you?

All my ringnecks are different - they all have a different way that they like to be loved. Yoshi (the one with the crippled feet) will take any sort of loving - any time at all. Howie the crazy one, likes a scratch - but only from me. Eppy - well loving only when he is having a good day -- don't even try and touch him if he is having an off day.

Jasper will fly to me and was quite mushy at the start of the breeding season. She still comes to me and will happily sit on me while I pat her. I have to pry her off somedays, especially when something interesting is going on in her cage, like changing it around or cleaning her water bowl etc. We have a routin worked out. Before I enter her cage, she flies over to the door where I put my hand above the door and she will climb there and stay until I go in, then she will fly to me when I ask.... most days. lol The bubs I have raised still allow me to pat them but they would rather fly around the house or play with their toys during the day. It is mainly at night that they start getting a bit more cuddlier. But I have found they are not the sort of bird that likes being cuddled or patted all the time.
