I really would like to have a nice tame bird and was thinking of maybe getting a Lorikeet? I have 2 IRN - a vicious supposedly hand-raised female and an aviary male. I'm happy to leave these 2 as aviary birds by themselves. But I'd like another bird I can walk around with, cuddle and play. I was thinking about a Lorikeet and had a look at some ads. There's a tame bird for sale which's used to live inside on a freestand. If I'd take him he'd be outside in a cage but I'd take him out in the mornings and when I come home from work. Will an older Lorikeet get used to a new person or should I better look for young ones? Any other advice in regards to taking care of Loikeets? Thanks!

Lorikeets LOVE people , love attention , love life . I have my own bred lorikeets and a pair i rescued , no idea of their age , but are super friendly , love kisses and cudles . I recomend you go and meet some at a pet shop , breeder , where ever and see which one LIKES YOU . They are great birds , i adore them -make sure you buy premium food , no cheap yuk , study up before you get one .

I've posted this a while ago. I drove nearly 200 km to have a look at the bird. Than the woman who was selling him wasn't home (she knew I was coming) only her brother was there. The bird was in an old greenhouse away from the family, other birds or anything else for that matter. He was sitting in the cage making one weir act over and over again. He didn't even fully noticed that we were there.
Due to the behavioural problems I decided not to take him, I don't know enough about birds to make him right again if that would be possible at all.

Oh thats terrible , knowing you were comming and not being there !! Rainbows can be a mess when they have no attention , left by them selves with no contact , they really love attention . I had a friend who breeds and sold a bub rainbow to people -they got sick of him and put him in the garage by himself , no attention , no nothing , he went crazy , rocking and wimpering , my friend bought him back when she saw the awful treatment , hes still a little nutty and traumatised , it was soo sad .

Yes, I felt pretty sorry for the poor bird but I don't think I would have done him a favour. I just hope somebody with more bird knowledge than me bought him and out him out if his misery.

yes , its a terrible thing for birds when their owners decide they cant be bothered any more . Thats why i dont sell my birds , while they are with me they are all happy , well fed and loved . I would worry about them soo much and if i knew they were being neglected i would be heartbroken
