Hello, l found a baby pee wee earlier today and have tried to look after it, l tried to feed it mince and it wouldn't eat it, where l am it is extremely hot and this appears to be the reason it is sick. i currently have it laying beside me in a towel, to help it survive could someone tell me: 1. What l could feed it? 2. What to give it to drink? 3. Any other info, (anything at all). I tried to breathe cold air on it just before and l noticed something weird it mouth started to open and close, it started to move more and it's eyes opened... As soon as l stopped breathing cold air everything reversed again, is this good or bad? Please, any help is MUCHLY appreciated, Thanks, David...

It doesnt sound too good. Keep it in a cool dark place, dip his beak in a shallow dish of water and see if he will drink, add an electrolyte if you have one. make sure u dont go over his nostrils. I dont imagine he will feel like eating until he has cooled down a little. Breathing on him probably woke him up a bit, that may have been why he started moving around.
Try not to handle it too much until it is looking a little better as they go into shock quite easily.
I hope someone with more experience with heat stressed peewees will come on, i have really only dealt with cockatoos who are heat stressed.

You tried but sometimes these things happen. I am guessing you are down south where the heat wave is happening at the moment. The bird more than likely died from stress bought on by heat and other things.

hello, l live in Australia, NSW, but yes, quite close to south, um, how long can it live without food and/or water? And like in my other post l said 3 things it done just befor eit passed away: 1. Wings open up. 2. Feet come out from under the body. 3. Eyes open. Does anyone know why it might have done these. I know it sounds weird but do you think that maybe it might have thought it was flying to whatever was next.

The muscles spasm just before death. That is most likely what made it do those things. They can't go too long without food or water, water in particular. There may have been other things wrong with it that you couldn't see. Unfortunately by the time we see that birds are sick or in distress it is often too late to help as they hide illness very well. At least you tried and that is a good thing. If you ever find another, as Megzly said, keep in in a dark quiet place. If it's hot keep it in a cool place, if it's cold keep it in a warm place. Don't feed it straight away, wait several hours at least. Try to give it water with electrolytes but don't force it. Also, handle it as little as possible as being held by people can stress them enough to kill them. Again David, good on you for trying, and for asking for advice. ;D

No worries.....what Jules said is similar to what I was going to say also. Just know that you did well to even try but unfortuneatly sometimes these things happen.

Hi i was wondering what information of feeding and rearing a young peewee. It was found by a friend of mine on a property, cold from the rain and covered in black ants. We didnt know if it would survive, but he picked it up got the ants off it and kept it in his pocket until he got to my place as it was still breathing. the first day i fed it mince with water mixed through, and now have it on a reigrime of baby mealie worms and gek baby bird rearing mix alternating feds every 2 to three hours. What i need to know if how do i know if the crop is empty before feeding as i want to advoid sour crop? The bird seems to be doing okay, is only very young with tiny wing feathers and very very tiny tail feathers and no feathers under its wings. Need any information to help now keep my new family member alive thanx.

Your on the right track. PeeaWee's crops are not like a parrots crop. How much formula do you feed it. I would think maybe about 5mls. Also at its age i would only feed every 4 hours. Is the rearing food insectivore???

Wombaroo do a very good insectivore mix. Don't feed too many mealworms as they are very rich in protein. A baby that young would only need one or two every couple of days at the most.
