Hi all, my name is Tony and i baught a rainbow lorikeet about 5 days ago... the man at the bird shop said it is 15 weeks old. but was not sure if it was male or female... He said the only way was to dna test it???
So far i have been giving it the lorikeet powder food and fresh water everyday... i have also fed it grapes once or twice from my hand..
when i put my hand in the cage he pokes around abit but when he holds onto me with 1 of his legs he bites abit hard......
Im realy nice to the bird and look after it well.. im just wondering how long it will take for the bird to fully trust me and jump up on my shoulder and trust my hand and so on... any information on tips and help with this matter would be great!!!
Is it to late at 15 weeks old??

Spend lots of time with the bird, and I am sure it will get better. Some birds go through a stage of nipping. I am not big on pet parrots as I only have the one, but time is the main factor. Rewarding positive behaviour with treats will reinforce the behaviour.

yes as Shaun said most young birds go through a "teething stage" for want of a better phrase. The will test you out and see how far they can push you....so to speak. Just keep handling him and be patient with him ....... lorikeets can bite quite hard for a small beak too. They do make wonderful little pets though and are such funny little characters.
When he bites.......don't get too upset. I will still make my birds step up on me if they bite but if they continue to bite or show they don't want to be picked up then I leave them in their cage......they do eventually decide they feel like my company. Sometimes I just leave the door to their cage open so they can come out when they feel like it and then they might be a little more receptive to coming to me.
Just remember patience and don't get upset and spend time with him even if he is just sitting on your shoulder while you sit at the pc....... ;D

15 weeks is not an old bird either.....it is still a baby so you should have no trouble taming him down. You just need to gain his trust. Try bribing him with food and see how that goes.

Just remember only to reinforce positive behaviour with treats and ignore the bad behaviour.

yes if he bites.......no treat.......
put your hand in the cage with the treat.....if he comes up without showing aggression, give him the treat......if he show's aggression......don't give him the treat. He will eventually realise "hey when I go to bite, they take that juicy treat away"

I have to be careful with Erik my young eclectus as he is going through that biting stage....testing me to see how far he can push me. He will learn.......they always do. As we speak he is sitting on my shoulder rubbing his head on my face ;D little suck he is lol

It might take a month or two for it to be fully bonded with you. I tamed a 3 year old rainbow lorikeet that i got off a friend. He never gave it it any attention at all and it took around 1 month to bond fully with me.

Can i just add -dont put your hand in the cage -tempt him to your hand with a treat , mine all love arrowroot biscuites , just break a little off . Sit beside the cage , talking to him , offer the treat , allow him to come forward , if he backs off , just keep talking and offer again . Dont grab at him or be rough , patience will pay off , Lorikeets are loving birds and very inquisitive , even as you walk past the cage , stop n offer a little treat then walk on , talking all time . Eventually he will choose to come to you -because he wants to . good luck -patience remember , no force , no grabbing .
