Is feeling between the hips still a method?? I havent ownded lovebirds for years now, but that is the way we used to do it. Bones close together is a cock and further apart a hen. This method worked 100% for me.
I went to a pet shop once and they did the magnet thing. lost me right there!

Cool, wish you where closer, this little guy seems so put out being in a cage by himself, it seems to me that he has come out of a colony and his not very hand tamed, infact freaks out when I put my hand in the cage but that might be stressed I am thinking about looking to re homing him with somone who has a colony if his owner does not come forward

Hi, I have an Albino LB named Beeny just a bub and I put a young Budgie in with him and they get on famously as they are usually colony birds.
I'm actually waiting for a another LB I'm getting a violet to put with Beeny.
Friend who is a LB breeder says the way to sex them is by their stance. Female legs are at a wide stance. Male stance is closer, hope that makes sense

If it's not a bub you can tell by feeling between the legs, like Shaun said: pelvic bones close together male, further apart (for egg laying) female.

The age old methods of sexing love birds are many and varied and when i was breeding Mask love birds I used the pelvic bone test and it was about 80% accurate, I would also study the birds in the aviary seeing how they perched and it is true the hens do have a wider stance than the cock birds but once again you have to have something to compare them with, in addition the hen is usually a bigger bird than the cock bird however the only 100% sure way to sex love birds is DNA or surgical sexing or the hen lays an egg until then everything else is guesswork even though some of it is educated guesswork. I have just started to breed lovies again and believe I have two pair, they were sexed by the pelvic method, however when the hen decides to lay then I will know for sure.

G get in touch with our new member crdj81 Carly here she breeds LB and knows about sexing and genetics and has the most beautiful colours and healthy birds, that's who I got my Ghost (Beeny) yep he got a name change. I went to feed them and he had disappeared or so I thought he was actually sleeping in his metal feed bowl which is fairly large and on the back of his very large cage. he is my pride and joy. Like you I was not a fan of LB,s until I got him.

Avril - i have been talking to her via e-mail going to come down your way and look at some of the sf masks that she has for sale and have a chat to her about what she thinks I should do to start my little group up and running. Hopefully I will be coming back from her house with at least another pair. I just wish i knew what my guys where I would hate to end up with 4 hens (knowing my luck I would!)
