Does anyone know how the pied mutation is 'carried' in redrumps ? Blue pied pr. I have two types blue pied cock and 'Australian pied' (green & gold) hen, I bread the two together and got an opaline blue and opaline both cocks and two Aust. pied (sex?). Unsure if the parents were split. But are the opaline babies now split pied? Cheers, Austin

If the mutation inheritance is anything like budgies then it should go like this:
Females only carry one set (of whatever it's called - I'm not up on genetic terms) Males carry two sets. Female parents give one set to male offspring and none to female. Male parents give one to male and one to female offspring. That is how females usually show what males are or what males are hiding. Male offspring will only look like dad if mum is visual and dad is visual (or hiding the gene).
Parents of yours, if they are both visual pied and you got opaline males, then both parents must also be opaline. All males will be split to pied if they are not visual.
Hope I've made sense as this is a bit rushed as don't have computer at home at the moment.

with the pied gene in red rumps it has to be on both sides of the parents to be visually shown in the offspring whether it be split or visual. it is similar to the blue gene

Thanks, It can be hard to find infomation when you want it, and I am not the best at using this thing (computor/internet). I found genetic calculators for the rosellas but not for red rumps. It's not an Australian site, odd they know more (or offer more) infomation on Australian parrots than any Australian site I could find. Ok a little off topic It's good to talk to people doing the same thing so it's forums like this that I find help the most.
Thanks again Ozwell
