Hi G, I guess the easiest way to explain it is this. with masked lovebirds you get two types of factors the violet factor and the dark factor both of which are co-dominant which means (with out getting too technical) they are inherited in factors ie single and double. Any bird with carries one of these genes will visualy show a change in their feathers thus there is no such thing as a split violet or dark factor. The dark factor is a change in the feather itself and is not a change in the actual colour of the bird, the light is just reflected differently so the bird looks a different colour but is still green or blue. A Jade is a single dark factor (SDF)Green and an olive is a double dark factor(DDF) Green. A cobolt is a single dark factor (SDF) blue and a slate or mauve is a double darkfactor (DDF)blue. The dark violet birds you like are either a(SDF) blue with a violet factor (cobolt violet)or a double violet factor blue. Often you will find that a Green bird that carries a single dark factor and a single violet gene will also look olive so it can be hard to tell the difference. You also get Dilutes and pastels with the factors and that is where your yellow olives and yellow Jades which are in fact pastels. If you want some info on breeding with these factors just let me know.

WOW thanks Carly that was great. Arvil... I sort of stuffed up. i had my six i was happy then was offered a normal green as a pet, went to pick him up and he had paired up with another normal green in the avairy so took them both and then also took a pair of dilutes who came home and the hen laid an egg So no more lovies for me or a while... unless carly has some violets or Olives for me.....

I knew you would get hooked....The little buggers grow on you. There might be an olive there if you want it I can hold it for you just let me know by Monday otherwise hes going to the pet shop. I can't part with any violets though. They will have more babies soon, now that the heat has gone. I've given them some nesting material and they have started build their nests again. I will let you know as soon as I have some little ones.

Let me know when you get more little ones. We would love some more Violets for some jades or Olives but to tell you the truth the drive is just not worth it for one bird sorry. Will wait for your next lot to come and then give you a shout

Yes the others are fine, they have paired up the way we wanted them to so I think I have a 50/50 split but just waiting on the DNA test to confirm then we can move forward from there

Hi G, Avril said you ended up with a lot of boys that a bit of a shame. My birds have finished their much needed break now and are back sitting on eggs so it shouldn't be too long before I have some new little ones. I have a couple of new pairs which are breeding and they should hopefully produce some good colours. I will keep you posted so you can have first tibs if you want.
