Hubby just caught a small snake in our "snake proof aviary" does any one know what it is and weither its nasty or nice, it's about 30cm long with a yellow tip on its tail, reddish brown body and its head is quite beautifull with yellow stripey markings and dark brown patches.

The only good snake is a dead snake Kim and best viewed from the end of a long handled shovel. My philosophy with snakes is kill first identify later and before someone says some snakes are protected .....so am I John

Polly, you naughty girl, I must say I would be the same but John likes to take them into the park and let them go, so many many times when the birds are disturbed in the middle of the night we have been out there with two rakes carrying 3 metre carpet snakes to the park. But I draw the line at the browns and red bellied blacks he can do them on his own.!!! Our property is declared Land for Wildlife so we have to expect some wildlife!!! As long as they stay away from me and the birds I'm fine ;D ;D ;D

I'm so upset I went outto check on the birds this morning and my lutino ringneck hen was dead, she was fine yesterday even after we caught the snake (yes it was in her cage) but I don't know if it was a coincidence or not the bird hasn't got a mark on her and she was eating after we caught the snake, so I don't know, I'm just so dissapointed, we were about ot sell her and her partner, but even so she was a beautifull hen.

I don't know how this darn snake got in, our aviaries are completely covered in snake wire, we've had snakes on top of the cage before but never in them, hubby's taking the snake to the wildlife park for ID, so we will find out if it's poisoness or not, it's only a baby so I'm worried there are more out there, it was a really pretty snake I've never seen it before but it isn't a python as I doesn't have the right shaped head.

I'm so sorry to hear that Kim, did you check the bird all over for puncture marks, it could have been as Bill said shock. It's tragic when this type of thing happens.

That is terrible news Kim, I am so sorry for your lost. I would be in the category that a dead snake is a good snake, sorry but they scare the beejezus of of me. I would be longer at getting it indentfied as there could be more of the little buggers around. Cheers Anna
