Breeder's Choice Cat Litter. But a word of WARNING on the odd occasion i have had some chicks ingest it. Doesn't digest to well and have to resort to a full crop wash to get it all out. So if anyone does use it be careful. I also use Coles own brand cat litter is made out of recycled paper as well.

Chris, i guess that would be safe for babies other wise you wouldn't use it. I hate it when the babies eat it. Will look into that product. Thanks.

I would strongly recommend avoiding any clumping cat litter with babies. If the baby happens to ingest some of it and it clumps in the gut of the bird, then it can cause a blockage with likely fatal results.
Similarly a paper based litter such as Breeders Choice can also cause problems when it gets wet and swells.
The only cat litter I can recommend with baby birds, who can often experiment with tasting everything around them, is Max's Cat Litter, available from Woolworths, and probably other stores. It is made from rice husks, and when wet breaks down to a powder that is easily digested by baby birds - just a bit of roughage for the bird.
I've been using Max's for several years now and have had no problem at all with it. We also use it in the shop as a substrate for snakes and lizards for the same reason as for baby birds - if they swallow it it just gets digested as normal food.
cheers,
Mike

I certainly didn't learn anything at all about the feeding of my birds on any forum. I have how ever picked up a few ideas from others. What i feed my birds today is the way i have always done it. If i didn't have it right how come my eclectus hens have a clutch of 3 chicks most of the time. As far as the condition of any of my birds go they are in top condition. I don't have any health problems with any. The only problem was my baby hen eccies with orange feathers, i have reassessed the hand rearing foods and have come to the conclusion that it isn't what i feed my babies.
I have been breeding and hand rearing my parrots for the best part of 20years now, i read heaps of books on anything with feathers. I didn't go into this hobby blind i did heaps of research before i even started hand rearing. My knowledge is from my own experiences and what i learned from the guys in our bird club that have 40 & 50 Years experience.
Everyone knows my history with in the forum you have mentioned Smiley hence my user name being Robyn now.

Oh!!! and by the way to make my self clear regarding giving a 3 week old baby 3 feeds a day. The baby is assessed as to how much will fit into its crop, between the 3 to 4 weeks of age i increase each feed until such time the volume feed for the whole day is more than it would have been on the 4 feeds. so its a gradual thing over the week. And i haven't changed anything at all in that area. The baby in the pic is on 3 feeds a day and has been since taken from the nest. His volume each feed is 50mls + each feed. I do know what i am doing. I know i did quote the feeding times from day 1 through to wean, out of the BK Handrearing & Incubation Book. But every one knows each baby is different and that the books are only a guide to help people. Cheers, Robyn.

Robyn don’t feel the need to justify yourself to Smiley seriously
Now that I know what smiley meant by her sarcastic comment ... I just want to know
What right do you have to come on here and post Robyns photos and speak trash about her?
Cause some of us know you ban her on your forum so do you now feel the need to come on this one and drive her off it?
Hopefully people will make there own judgment about Robyn rather then take notice of someone else’s sarcasm

Ok.....I have had to delete what I typed first........I dont want a fight But I have to say Nat I think your comment to Robyn is unfair and in my opinion in the short time she has been here she has not done or said anything to make me think that comment is justified. We all have different ways of doing things.......all of us do things differently........I know I do but that doesn't mean it is wrong. From the pics I have seen of Robyns her birds seem healthy. Yes one hen looked a bit scrappy.......so did Skye last year and this year Gunny is looking scrappy. It is fine Nat for you to have your opinions........but don't make things personal. Oh and I think I will lock this just so this doesn't turn into a "messy thread". Sorry guys....
