This all started six days ago,
my dear little white front scarlet male - Sapphire - starting to look a little ill. It had been windy for about four days and the wind was bitter, very strong and only a tiny amount of rain involved (we only got 15mm), anyway my little man wasn't looking so hot so we caught him and put him in the hospital cage. Two days in the hospital cage and he was looking a lot better, meanwhile his ever faithfull partner was left in the aviary with all the other neophemas and she was sitting by herself and looking very lonely - but not sick. Then a few days later we are doing the morning walk as we always do and bugger me here is Sapphire's little wifey dead on the aviary floor. I was heartbroken, and then had to go and tell Sapphire, who by now was feeling a whole lot better and couldn't wait to get back to his little lady. Needless to say, I didn't put him back in the aviary, I thought it better to keep him in the hospital cage one more night to make sure he was well and truely back to normal before finding out that his best mate was gone. So this morning I went out to say G'day and the worst possible site was in front of me - he had also died.
I am thinking that when we took him out to hospitalise him, we should have taken her as well. They were such a lovey dovey pair of birds and they spent all their time together. I think the four days without her man was just too much for her to bear, and then when he realised she wasn't there any longer, (maybe because he wasn't as well as we thought), he just lost the will to live also.
All the other neophemas are fine and everyone seems to be doing the norm. We were very fond of him and his little lady, they would take food from your hands and they always looked so proud and beautiful. They will both be sadly missed.
RIP Sapphire
