I keep an assortment of finches and waxbills as well as canaries and Diamond Doves and when they are breeding I make up some eggfood for them. Six hard boiled eggs - boiled until inners are all dry. Two slice of whole meal bread, A scoop of Foreign finch seed - boiled for five minutes and then rinsed under the tap. Grate the bread and chop the eggs thinly. Add the boiled seed and mix well together. Place the egg shells in the microwave and cook for two mintues then crush and place in the mix. Sometimes I will grate a carrot and place into the mix and sometimes i will add cod liver oil or Safflower oil or even multi vitamins to sprinkle ontop of the mix. My birds love this but I must confess I don't make it enough. I'm lazy and use the dry eggfood that you get from the pet stores. All my birds seem to love my mix and I can highly recommend it. I have even given it to my parakeets and they never waste a drop. What type of eggfood / rearing food do you use and do you make your own?

I am also lazy Steve and use the pet shop mix. I only feed it to my parrots when they have young in the nest. I will have to give your recipe a try. Also interested to hear from other people on this.

Steve, I used to do stuff like that when i had the cockatiels. But to much of the egg and biscuit gave them wet nests so ended up not doing it. These days i do the fruit & veg thing as i only have the larger parrots. I do soak pigeon seed mix or sprout it. I also make up like a wet mix with all sorts of ingredients blended together add hot water to feed the eclectus when they have young they do enjoy that.
My recipe is: 200g Rolled Oats 100g Wheat Germ 100g Polanta 100g Hulled Sun Flower Kernels 100g Almond Meal 1 pk Arrowroot biscuits 1 pk Hi Protein Baby Cereal. Tablespoon of Calcium Powder & Multi-vitamins Blend all ingred. in a food processer to almost a powder, doesn't have to be to fine. Store in air tight containers. It also freezers well. I also use this as a weaning food for my eccie babies when they are almost weaned like on only 1 feed per day. I can add all sorts of finely chopped fruit & veg to it to get them used to other foods.
I have also reared a lot of baby birds on this formula. The Ringnecks & Alex's did very well on it.
Robyn.
