Well i have 2 very large empty hanging cages on my back deck. It has been bugging my friend for years. This friend down the road breeds all sorts of birds, from finches to mandrine ducks to grass parrots to Kings & Superbs and throw a few Rosellars in as well.
For years he has been trying to talk me into some finches, i might add i haven't a clue about them but i can learn. So it looks like come the weekend i am going to be the proud owner of a pair of Ruddies & Java's. I can hardly wait.
Will keep you posted on that one.

Thanks Robert but do you mean to tell me i have to feed Ruddies Maggots, that's yuck. Oh well a pair of tweezers won't go astray to pick the little crawleys up with. But seriously they are pretty little birds the Ruddies. I am sure to get heaps of help should i get stuck.
Thanks
Robyn.

Hi Robyn, African Fire Finches are great little birds but not many around in the UK. They are best kept on their own because in breeding season the Cock sometimes becomes aggressive towards other species. A large spacious cage would be ideal. Livefood is what they love but I know Waxbill breeders who only feed seed to their birds. Ask the chap who you are getting them from what he feeds them with and try and give a simular diet to them. All my Waxbill get plenty of Foreign Finch seed but I also feed them Dried Miniworms. They do not smell and are not very messy. The nutrition value is not great but you can always sprinkle multi-vitamin powder over them? Java Sparrows are great. Very smart looking and have plenty of character. I keep Normals (Grey), Whites, Fawns, Silvers & Opel Isabel. Normals are very nice and I like to see plenty of them in Aviculture. They are on the vunerable cites list and not many around in Java anymore. Mine eat mainly seed. Foreign Finch and Mixed Canary. I also give them dried mealworms but to be honest you don't really need to? Firefinches and Javas do like greens and mine seem to love Lettuce. What you must consider is if you have two pairs do you have enough room to house all them chicks? Before you know it you will have cages everywhere? ? Enjoy! If you need any advice I will pleased to help.

Hope the cage you put the Ruddies in had small spaced wire. Keep both types of finches and love them both. Try putting a fruit fly trap in with the Ruddies and they can catch their own live food. Both types of finches love green seeding grass. Good luck. P.S. Aussie Finch Forum for how to make a fruit fly trap. LML
