Hi, I'm Tahnee and I live in QLD I own a few reptiles and I'm keen on finding myself a pet bird... I've joined this forum because I'm desperate to find someone who can sell me a baby Australian Magpie (black backed)... It's a strange choice I know, but a Magpie would be perfect... It's on the restricted birds list, I've got a Recreational Wildlife License and after contacting the EPA/Eccoaccess I've been informaed that I can infact own one... I'm guessing it would haveto be a licensed and log booked sale... If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be VERY gratefull. Tahnee.

First of all welcome to the forum. Magpies make great pets, until they turn around 2 years of age, they go very feral then, and having a bird with a long pointy beak, and not being scared if you, is a recipe for you loosing your vision! I have kept magpies, dealt with magpies, and know of many people with them, but they are best kept in a large aviary, with a group. Of all the people I know with them, only one breeds them, for the reason that the Channel Billed Cuckoos in the aviary kick teh eggs out and they their in their for the maggies to raise. You will not find a captive bred magpie, and the chance of being able to keep a rescued one in QLD is very very low, they may be on the lists, but it doesnt mean people are keeping them. ALso Magpies need a specialised diet with the right Ca:P ratio which can be hard to find. I do beleive you need to rethink what bird you want, a magpie is not a good First Bird.
What is it that makes you think a Magpie would be perfect for you?

I am looking at putting in the time and energy for hand raising (being educated in it first!) it is not a first bird, we have and have hand raised cockatiels. Before you flame me, yes I know Magpies are very different to cockatiels though I am willing to learn everything possible, the Ca:P ratio, you say you know people whoo keep them so would they not know about how to keep them on the right diet? the info is out there and I wish to learn... As for them being tame I have heard from a few people who have successfully cept a tame magpie before though they got theirs from nests (poached/illegal I know and I refuse to poach one for myself) I am fully aware that the bird has a chance of tuning "feral" and will need an aivary or, if more humane, handed over to someone who keeps them in groups

First of all it is illegal to sell any Native bird unweaned, so you will not be able to obtain one, and if you do it will be unlawful. I have a friend with an expectional Magpie, she is great, but she is one of not many. Under QLD law, a rescued native animal, is it cannot be released must be Euthanaised, unless a home in a suitable Zoo/Wildlife Park can be found. So unfortunatley a rescue one is out of the question. Good luck finding a captive bred one, but it is very very very unlikely

So hand raising is out of the question... fair enough
Conflicting comments? "Of all the people I know with them, only one breeds them, " "Good luck finding a captive bred one, but it is very very very unlikely "

If you read the end of my statement re Breeding
"Of all the people I know with them, only one breeds them, for the reason that the Channel Billed Cuckoos in the aviary kick the eggs out and they their in their for the maggies to raise"
No baby magpies are produced. The magpies are in their for the sole purpose of raising Channel Billed Cuckoo babies.
I never said I knew everyone in the country with a Magpie, so there is a slimest chance you may find one.

Hi there, and welcome!
I love maggies, they have the most delightful song, (even if I do have one here that persistently sings at 4am hehe)
I also love their markings, unique to each bird, I believe.
I hope you are able to fulfill your wishes and find one that you will be able to keep.
Have fun on the forum.
Cheers, Shauna ;D
