Hi all- I need some help here, I have a pair of Gouldian Finches that killed the chicks of some of my Zebra Finches in my avairy. So I caught the two Gouldians and put them in a seperate cage. What should I do once the breeding seasons over, should I put them back in the avairy? Please reply!!!!!!  |

I have never heard or found gouldians an aggressive bird?
are you sure that it may not have been something else.

Yes, we are sure it was the Gouldians, we saw them go into the Zebs nest and when we put the Gouldians in another cage the zebs started breeding again with no trouble.

Mixing Gouldians and Zebras never seem to be successful in my experience, but more usually it is the Zebras causing trouble by interfering with the Gouldian's nest. Maybe the Gouldians got sick of the Zebras messing them around and took revenge.
I would keep them separate if you are trying to breed both species.

I have had gouldians in a mixed aviary/cage many many years ago, and yes I found that some finches can become quite territorial including the gouldians.

Well I don't know if my gouldians will ever breed again, because ive got em in a small budgie cage (it's the only other cage ive got, because I have handreared budgerigars and cockatiels.

Most unusual. Keep both species together in an avairy here and have no trouble. It is a rasonable size avairy but. Only suggestion I can make is alternate. 6 months of the year in the avairy and 6 months of the year in the small cage for each pair. Gouldians have a breeding season but Zebs will breed anytime. So put the Gouldians in the avairy during their breeding season and the Zebs for the other 6 months. Good luck. Better still get another avairy.
