Hi just wandering who here feed pellets? as you all know my sun conure was weaned onto pellets. He will not eat much seed at all, He favours the pellets. The pellets are the first food he eats then he eats his veggies. I'm not sure how much pellets i should be giving him. I give him a handful of pellets a day which he eats it all. Today i had to give him a little bit more as he seemed hungry but still wouldn't touch the seeds. He weighs 106grams and is around 10 weeks old.
I still want him to eat seed but it looks like i have a pellet lover he won't even touch sunflower seeds. Its quite pointless buying 10kgs of vetafarm pellets for 1 bird. How long do pellets last? I'm not even sure how far a 2kg bag will go for a sun conure 1 week,2 weeks. So far the 350gram bag i've got has lasted 4 days.

Pellets are far, far, healthier than seed, and a diet of pellets, fruit and veggies is the best diet for most parrots, including Suns. Birds fed a seed based diet are getting an unbalanced intake of essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids etc, and will often end up with nutritional problems. For the record, my birds at home, the 15 family room pets, and made up of 7 cockatiels (all over 12 years, up to 18 years old - the 18 year old pair are currently searching for a nest site!!) pair ringnecks (17 years old and currently sitting on 6 fertile eggs) pair Princesses (12 years old) a Plumhead hen (10 years) male Crimson-wing (13 years) and a pair of African Greys (4 and 3 years) all get pellets and veggies. Seed is given as a VERY small treat when going back to their cages in the evenings. All are very healthy, although one cockatiel (16 years old) has a bit of arthritis - but then at 64 so do I . cheers, Mike

Conureowner1, i have to agree with Mike, although all 30 odd of my birds get pellets, i do also give seed, fruit & veggies as well as sprouted seed mix everyday. And like Mike some of my birds have some age on them. The oldest being a 70 year old Galah & he doesn't look like falling off his perch any time soon. So yes i believe a well balanced diet keeps the birds healthy & the Vets from the door.
Robyn.

All of my birds get pellets. You can store it in the freezer. Because pellets are dry, they will not freeze but it keep it fresh. Just keep enough out of the freezer for a few days.

I offer two desertspoons of mixed pellets, passwell low fat and tropican with a teaspoon of pumpkin seed, Dusty eats some but not many occasionally. As I've already posted she mostly eats sprout mixture plus veges and fruit.
