Hi everyone. This seemed like a great place for me to come, as I am the proud owner of a 4mo Galah. My first larger parrot (of any kind), which is kind of daunting and exciting all the same!
My family consists of hubby, 2 kids (human), 1 Galah, 2 dogs (both bull-mastiff), 3 chooks, 3 goldfish, 5 small guppies, 2 Siamese fighting fish, a budgie (used to have 2, but one escaped recently) and a canary.
Everyone says it's my zoo, but I know people who have more animals!
My dogs, Galah and canary are all 'rescue' animals. AJ (galah) was rescued out of a tree that was cut down, as a tiny baby, and hand raised along with 2 others. I then adopted AJ 3 weeks ago. Canary, Sam, was my Nan's. I took him because she was being attacked by butcher birds where she lived. She has since passed, but Sam is still with us and a very happy little canary!
I am quite hopeless when it comes to animals. I helped out a fledgling tawny frogmouth recently - it had fallen out of it's nest. I called a man I know in Canberra, who knows almost everything there is to know about Australian birds of prey, and got advice on how to deal with the poor little thing. If anyone ever finds a tawny that has fallen out of the tree, just pick it up and put it back in the tree. Chances are good that at least one parent is close by (they are VERY difficult to spot!)
AJ (galah) has already become one of my kids. Already testing the limits! But a lot of fun. I will be asking a fair few questions, I'm sure! I've only ever been around small birds like budgies. So this is quite an experience - one that I am really enjoying!
Cheers!
Carls
