Hi all, Just wondering if I can get some advise, I keep Bob inside most of the time and take him outside to his big house once maybe twice a week, usually on my days off. If the temperature goes above 32 - 35 degrees I don;t take him out, now I'm in a new estate so there are no trees on my property but we have shade cloth on his cage and give him a good bath etc.
Bob is a native bird and they live in the most inhospitable places in the wild, should I worry about him being outside in the heat?

My aviary birds are outside ....... there are some trees around.....if they look like they are too hot, I hose them down and give the aviary a good soaking too to cool things down. If in doubt I would even put the sprinkler on the roof of the aviary to cool things down. My aviary floor is sand so when it is soaked with water it stays wet for ages and keeps the aviary cool (about the only good thing about the sand actually lol). My indoor birds I also take outside in their cages and hose them down and leave the tray in the bottom with the water in it.......hopefully to keep them cool. If they need hosing more than once a day....then they get hosed. Lucky though now I am a stay at home mum again (for the past 5 weeks ..... woohoo) so I can give my birds a bit of extra attention.

Thanks, The reason I'm asking is because a few weeks ago we had a lot of Black Toos die down south when it got really hot, I think it was a couple of hundred of them!

yes I read about that. I am sure if you keep your eye on him and keep him cool then he will be fine. Even if you have to resort to putting him in a smaller cage and putting wet towels around him and blowing fans on them......that works too. We used to do that many years ago to keep ourselves and babies cool. Gosh I sound old now don't I. lol

oh and I must also add that I have never owned an air con or a clothes drier......still don't own a drier but hubby fitted an air con a few months ago. He told me last year........"if we are still in this house next xmas (meaning the one just past) then we are getting an air con for the birds at least". lol I had to laugh.......for so long we wouldn't get an air con because of the cost in electricity etc etc.......but he spends one xmas at home on holidays while I am at work and actually see's how hard it is to keep them cool........... hahaha. Oh and it was me who never wanted an air con. But now when we go out during the day and it is hot and we have to lock the entire house due to storms......and then the house is like an oven.........we set the air con and the birds are very comfortable when we get back ;D

I worry about the heat too, especially as they are forecasting 40 on Friday. Its always hot when I'm at work and can't keep an eye on them. I have a friend who lives 3 houses down who comes in and checks everyone if it is really hot and hoses the aviaries. I am worried about the 4 baby tiels in the box as they can't get out. I prop open the lid, but it gets really hot in there.

Ah well that was a good year for births then all the best people are born then. My oldest is turning 20 this year so I need to work for a lot more years until my 4th leaves school in 4 yrs, darn it. No grand kids I scare off any potential suitors to my pumpkin. I always liked Al Bundys showing the boyfriend out the door technique, open the door and into their face with a don't come back, lol. We have aircon my wife can't cope without it she is hot and cold at her age, but still younger than me. So Bob stays in climate control most of the time which is also why I was concerned. I lived in Brissy back in the 80's with just seiling fans and that was ok to an extent but its a bit more humid where you are so I agree with your other half there, must have it.
