Hi All,
My name is Jim I live on the coast in country northern New South Wales.
I put out wild bird mix for local parrots and have Sulphurs, Crimson Rosesella's, King Parrots, Gang Gangs, Rainbow Lorikeets, Corella's etc etc visit my feeder and watering system.
18 days ago there were 4 Sulphurs guarding the food from Lorikeets who were trying everything to get close to the food but to no avail, my wife noticed a 5th Sulphur sitting up under the house eves by itself. He/she slowly made it's way down to have a drink which is about 4 feet from the food and 3 of the other sulphurs flew instantly and bowled it over.
Then the sulphur that was bowled over flew off to a low shrub and then the unbeliavable happened we heard "Hello Cocky" come from the bird.
I went and grabbed a towel and walked over quiet easily picked the bird up and he was repeatedly saying "hello Cocky".
I nursed him in the towel until my wife returned with an old cocky cage that we keep in the shed for injured birds and he popped straight in there and drank water like there was no tommorrow.
Within 1/2 an hour he was having his head scratched putting up his wing for a scratch and saying "Scratch Cocky" and a few other unitellible sentences and words.....so definately he's either an escapee or he's been dumped.
We've put an add in the local paper and checked with the local vets and no one is missing him or claimed him.
We had a Sulphur for 38 years and lost him 7 years ago after an operation for two tumours on his vent. We're not over the loss of him and the mere thought of him makes tears well up.
This cocky is tame (but in no way as tame as our previous cocky) I don't trust him 100% and he's not hand tame (to climb up) but is a talker (has learnt our terriers bark already) and loves getting scratched.
We just really don't know what to do, of course the bird is working it's way into our hearts, but we are questioning (it's diminishing everyday) whether we really want to take him on.
Looks like we have unwittingly 'adopted' a sulphur for the duration. One half of my brain is elated and the other half is going "oh my god you do realise what you're getting yourself in for".
I'm just starting to remember the seed husks, dust and noise
I'll have lots of questions about how to get him tame etc.
Cheers,
Jim
