Help with a goffins cockatoo

I have copied this part of Nina's post from the introduction section. I know Goffins are not australian birds but being related to the corellas i thought someone here might be able to provide assistance......

I need some help with questions about cockatoos.I'll just copy what I wrote on the eclectus forum,hope you can help

--I know of a little goffin cockatoo ,Polly,its a male.He is 17 years old,and for several years he has lived in a basement in a parakeet cage,its not good light in this basement and he never gets anything to eat but seeds.Never gets a shower and extremely little attention from his owner.His has been placed there because they didnt want so much to clean up around his cage in the livingroom.I just got to know these people and i was shocked.
Polly LOVES people,he wants to snuggle and he sings,dance and does everything to get attention from people.But when i turned around to leave,he screamed like a baby,i almost cried.
He has just one perch in his cage,some dirty water and a cup of seeds,no toys at all.He must be bored silly,but his feathers are perfect,he had not plucked,amazing since he has lived like this for years now.He really touched my heart,and i asked his owner if he was willing to sell him.
He sais he'd be glad to get rid of him.
But i do not know very much about cockatoos,so i need your help.
Do goofin's usually go ok together with other birds?do they scream all day?
i have read that cockatoos like to scream,and very high hehe.
I really want to save Polly,but i dont feel i know enough about these birds.I hope someone in here can help me with all the info you know about goffins.But ill bet i can manage to give him a MUCH better home than this guy who owns him now.Do they require anything special than other birds?
I have read a bit on the net,but all i can find is pretty bad,like they just sits and scream all day,they just like one person,they are agressive to all other than the person of their choise .that they are extremely demanding and so on and so on..if this is the case will i be able to give him a good home ?i have many birds and other animals,and he will have to share me with them,i cant just spend all my time with him,if they are so demanding will he tolerate that,or just scream away?
i hope you can help me with some answers..i almost cry when i wrote this,you should have seen this poor lonesome bird in the little boring cage down in a dark basement,sooo happy because i talked to him a bit..made me so sad to see an intelligent creature in those livinig conditions..

Nina I know nothing about Goffins........but omg I would take him just to get him out of that "dungeon"

I'm sure they are no different to any other Cockatoo, yes they will scream if they are ignored for long periods of time and it may take time for it to settle in and be rehabilitated. Either way it needs to be rescued from its hell and given a life. I don't know what country this person is in but even if they cannot help it after a period of time there are Parrot rescue centers and it needs to be helped. I have read a few stories about mistreated birds and it has taken some people a year or more to rehab a damaged bird, but who cares how long it takes its the birds welbeing that matters.
My bird was dumped when it found its way to our house and it has taken years to undo the damage caused by mistreatment, but I would not give Bob away even when he does make some noise, lets face it if you want peace and quiet you don't have a companion Parrot!!!

I hope Nina does the right thing and tries to help even if only for a short time until it can be rehomed permanently?

I live in Norway,there are no such thing as a parrot rescue center in the whole country.But as you read in my other thread we are giving him a home
He seems to be a very nice bird,I think since he ad such a good life before this man got him,he hasnt been that damaged.But sure we expect some poblems wih a bird that has lived in a basement for 5 years
The plus side of it ,Polly really wants attention and he seemed very happy when i talked to him.So thats a good beginning.I cant wait until I get him home on sunday

Goffins are lovely little cockatoos and make great pets but can be prone to call for attention sometimes, good for you for getting the poor little bird out of that basement. You could always pair him up if he needs too much attention if the bird is a hen they are scarce here in the uk.

Welcome Nina, after reading through all this I'm glad to hear that the goffin is finally going to be a happier bird.

There might be a new market there for you - opening up a rescue shelter??

Polly is finally here :)He is a bit older then i said,not 17 but almost 20.He acts like he has lived here forever,so happy.
He got a shower since his feathers were very dirty and ruffled,and he really liked it.Has not had a shower in 5 years so it must have felt very good hehe.
He loves to cuddle ,when i put my fingers under his wing he turns around on his back to get scrathes on his belly.
But he is very clever,I took him out in the sun in a dog travel cage,he really looked at me when i closed the cage,and after his shower he just opened the door from the inside,so i will have to buy a good lock for the outdoor cage hehe.
He is very playfull,cuddly and funny.Not any big problems so far,but he has just been here for a day.
He has screamed a bit but i just ignore it,then he starts to sing and i praise him,better he sings than screams .And he tried to bite in a chair,I took my hand towards him to get him off,he tried to bite me ,but i am used to big macaws so i am not afraid of him at all,and just took my hands towards him,and he jumped right up,so i think he sences that i am not afraid of his lunging,and that really helps.

He really likes to take small things and put them on his back and let dem slide down his wing and then he will catch it with his beak,a bit funny

Polly just looks adorable. So happy and so content. You deserve a huge pat on the back. Thumbs up from me, there should be more people like you in the world.

Nina, you wonderful, wonderful person! I so love to hear rescue stories - I love to rescue animals myself when I can.

Polly looks just adorable. And so cheeky! Such a beautiful, clever bird - I'm jealous!
