Hello, we have a baby rainbow lorikeet (atleast i think its a rainbow lorikeet) and we arent quiet sure how old he is. Is there any specific way to determin how old he is? Let alone what sex he is? He fell out of our tree right into our laps and we have fallen completely in love with him. - we are also in the process of getting a permit to keep him. Please help - i can send a photo to your email if you would like to see a photo.

Baby Rainbows have a dark brown beak which progressively becomes red as they mature so that by 6 months old it is the nice red beak of the wild rainbows. Can the baby fly at all, and what stage is it's feather development at. Has it a dull set of body, wing and tail feathers, or are the wing and tail feathers not developed yet? You statement that he fell out of a tree into your lap suggests he may have a problem with his wings - Rainbows very rarely just fall out of a tree. It is not possible to accurately sex a rainbow visually. A sexually mature bird can sometimes be sexed by behaviour, but usually it is necessary to get them DNA sexed. I see elsewhere you ask about his calling. What are you feeding him? Have you got the proper Lorikeet wet and dry powder mixes? Assuming he is a brown beaked baby then you should be giving him wet mix powder mixed with warm, but not hot (think baby bottle temps) water to a pouring cream consistency and fed by a spoon - he will soon learn to take this by himself. Also put dry powder in, a water bowl and some fruit - such as diced green apple. Constant crying may be a sign of hunger, but it could also be just wanting attention. If he is eating lots of food and is eating by himself with food in his cage then it is more likely a need for contact. Photos would be great - some instructions on how to post them on the forum are at aussiebirds.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=questions&action=display&thread=5878cheers, Mike
