I brought my first cockatiel a few days ago, i sit near his cage, talk to him, eat next to the cage, i littrally send every spare second i have with him. Every time i go over their tho he just backs away, hisses at me, he never come near me he tries to get as far away as possible it just seams like he hates me. I have tried feeding him carrots, brocoli, lattuce, potato and he hates everything. He comes out of his cage quite often but when its time to go back he just hisses and bites. Any suggestions on what i could do to get him to like me? It would be greatly appriciated thankyou ;D

Be patient, you have to gain his trust. Sounds like he may have had a bad experience with his previous owners. Why don't you try millet which is long so that you don't get too close to him at first. If he starts eating it you can gradually get closer and closer until you can get him to step up onto your hand. Don't forget that birds just hate being grabbed so avoid doing that. The main thing is patience.

I brought him from an aviry I'm not 100% sure if he was tame I think he is about 4-5 months old? It sounds like he is an aviary raised bird that has never been handled. What colour is he? perhaps he is an older bird? Can you post a photo of him so we might be able to get an idea of his age? In general, while it is possible to tame an older (4 months or older) cockatiel, it is usually very hard. By 6 to 8 months I would never try - too stressful for the owner and especially the bird. The ideal age to tame a cockatiel raised in the aviary is between 2 and 3 months, but the best option by far if you want a nice friendly pet cockatiel is to find a hand raised baby from a good breeder. cheers, Mike

I live in SA but not in Adelaide. I breed cockateils and hand tame them but I live a bit far...about four or more hours away. I can try and look for a few breeders for you if you like.
