Now that things are looking brighter for this little guy I thought it was safe to mention i have a baby Red Tail Too i was asked to help. Poor little bugger had a crop full of thrush & was not doing to well at all. This is the 3rd day i have had him/her & it did look grim there for awhile. But i have managed to turn the corner & i think we have almost cleared the crop.
I also would like to tell all you people out there to go out & get some Travelers Friend Citrus Seed Extract & put just a drop or two into your babies formula as a preventative of your them getting thrush. It is also used as a water cleanser & can be used for all birds.
This poor little guy has had to have his crop cleared & washed out 3 times a day with ACV & water to try to get rid of the problem. I had to clear the crop as it was full of a thick mucous & the whole wall of the crop was coated in the thrush. Once i had cleared the crop i place half a ml of nilstat into the mouth & crop & gave it a good massage, half an hour before its feed. Today has been a turning point he is actually emptying out himself & not having so much mucous in the crop. I will continue to medicate until all signs of the problem are gone. By the way should anyone need to use Nilstat on their birds for thrush the dosage is 1 ml per 400 gram of body weight half an hour before food.
I tell you though i have been under extreme stress myself. The last week has been a little sad. We had lost two old members of our animal family & i wasn't about to make it a 3rd.

Yep...well done Robyn. By the way where does a person buy Travellers Friend Citrus Seed Extract? Try any good health store or chemist. It is actually Grapefruit Seed Extract but the powers that be had the name changed something to do with customs i think because its an imported product.

Update....on the little RTB. Here we are 2 weeks later & a few up & downs along the way. More downs actually but this little fellow just won't give in & neither have I. Although it got to the point on Friday that if things didn't improve by Monday I was going to make that final visit to the Vet with him. Well Friday afternoon his crop started to work & has done ever since. Although he is still in ICU I feel confident he will pull through. I have stopped all meds now & he is holding his own.
I have also been busy with a newly hatch RBT. It's 5 days old & is powering on. 2 hourly feeds have been a bit of a drain but that is only for a week or so & we stretch it out as the volume of formula increases.
I will post pics as soon as i get some time.
Cheers.

I will post pics as soon as i get some time. Cheers. A few years ago I went to the USA to give a talk at a convention organised by the Gabriel Foundation, and afterwards went to visit several breeders I knew in Arizona and Texas. One of the breeders visited was Rick Jordan, who wrote the bible on hand rearing (Parrots: Hand Feeding & Nursery Mangement) with Howard Voren. We had a look through his baby nursery and he had a lot of babies of all ages - probably around 100 babies in all from day 1 to weaning. Rick told me that his rule of thumb for feeding newly hatched chicks (assuming they didn't have any problems) was to give 2 hourly feeds through the day and night until they were 10 grams in weight, then 2 hourly in the day but let them have a 5 to 6 hour break overnight until 20 grams and then from 20 grams he would put them on an 8 hour break overnight and the usual 4 hourly feeds in the day. That has worked for me, although I try to avoid babies under 2 weeks if at all possible. cheers, Mike

How's the little black going Robyn? Hope all is improving. Friends of ours just had one leave the nest for the first time the other day and I have been kept up to date with pics - truly a magnificent bird.

How did you go with this baby robyn? Hope it all went well. RTB have to be on eof my all time favourite birds. One day I'll find a nice affordable acreage close to where we are now and a nice large aviary for a pair of these will be the first design and build.

No sadly i lost that baby but the other chick i raised from the egg is doing very well. In fact he flew for the first time 2 nights ago. They are really lovely birds but i think this little one i have has a bit of an attitude.
Thank you for asking.
