Is there a way to make it bird safe? I want to build my own play gym and I have an old draw I wanted to incorporate into the design, but it seems to be varnished. Is there a way to safe? Will it be safe as long as the bird can't get to it?

Ali, I wouldn't use anything that i wasn't sure of. Alex's are great chewers, they will have a go at anything & i mean anything. When I had my first pair they got stuck into lead sinkers that i might add were on the doors of a small cage I was given. One expensive lesson learned.
The best play stand i ever had for my Alex's was a large tree branch i put in a bucket of rocks to keep it upright. I then hung all sorts of stuff on the branches. When they demolished that i just cut another one to replace.

Gee Robyn you scare me sometimes with how similar we are.......I just posted on Ali's playstand post.......and described my playstand.........sounds just like yours.........and my description of alex's was almost the same......sort of lol This is one that I bought on special from PSOA but I added all the toys and the sizal (spelling) rope for grip. He loves this one also. This is Ellen's (meandem) female Chuckles with my boy Erik on my homemade playstand. This is Erik on his home made play area. He flies between this one and the one I bought from PSOA and to the cages and to us ;D Oh and I agree with Robyn.......I would not be using anything with varnish on it. Alex's are like termites (as I said in the other post) they chew anything and everything.
