Hi. I've just started breeding canaries, and i really have no idea what i'm doing.I've paired some birds up, but they aren't doing anything. How long should i wait before repairing everyone? Is there anything i can do to make them want to start breeding?

I am not a canary expert......but how long have you had the birds?? I assume you have got males and females paired up?? Do you have nests in with them?? Make sure they get plenty of fresh stuff too mine love spinach and or bok choy and I give him a small bowl of mixed fruit and veges (the same as what I give my bigger parrots) grated carrot, grated zuccini's rockmelon/watermelon, paw paw, celery, apple.etc etc this is just a sample of what i give my birds every day......it changes depending on what i have and what is in season. They also get soaked seeds or sprouts including my canary and when I cooked a bean mix up I give Songa (canary) some too. He did have a mate but she died last year I think and they did have some babies but only managed to raise the first bub.

They've been paired up for about 6-8 weeks. I changed a couple around cause they turned out to be the same sex. The nest have been in since the beginning and i gave them a liner, shredded heshan and feathers. Mine mostly get veggies, cause the majority of mine don't seem to keen on fruits. They love corn. Fresh food and water every day. No stress.

Well it is probably just a matter of waiting now. If I remember rightly my pair would stop breeding during winter and start up again in Spring.......so yours just might start doing "stuff" soon. Also if they are moulting it upsets them too.

Some might never breed, you can't just match up two of them and magically have babies! Give it time. 6-8 weeks is nothing. Warmer weather, more abundant foods and less traffic around the cages should encourage them.

Good luck! I've only had a go at breeding finches with no success. They laid an egg once but that was about it.
