Hi everyone Jazz is doing good has started eatting seed finally. His 10 weeks old now and is only gettting formula once a day. His eatting some seed but not alot i think the problem is me lol. Everytime i see his veggie bowl empty i refill it is that ok to do or should i stop and get him to eat more seed. Each day he seems to go through 3 bowls of veggies altho some of it ends up on the floor. He is a pretty good size for a 10 week old sun conure. So far i've got him eatting snowpeas and corn in veggies in fruit he will eat apple and pear. Even if he has food in his crop he still begs for his formula at night time which i give.

he sounds nice and healthy to me ;D I don't give my cockatiel much seed anymore. I was giving her pellets but ran out and since then I give her a millet spray and she gets all the usual fresh stuff my others get and I made a bean mix today (something I know she loves) and even my babies at the moment love it too.

oh and the reason I don't give Snowy my cockatiel seed is because she became a seed junkie........I handraised her too so I know she was eating well......but she decided that she only wanted to eat seed. So I decided to swap her over to pellets and her usual fresh stuff and once she started eating the pellets I also noticed she was eating her fresh stuff again........and now she rarely gets the small parrot seed. I will admit on the odd occassion I will give her a treat of small parrot seed (it has sunflower seeds and she is addicted to them) but mostly now it is a millet spray .......

Agree with you guys, seed is almost unnecessary. Sprouted seeds are a wonderful thing to use as they are chock full of nutrients. You can buy them in the supermarket in the fridge section of the fruit and vegie area.

when buying them from the supermarket it is advised to give them a wash because you don't know how long they have been sitting there for. Not saying not to buy them........because on occassions I buy them too......but just make sure you rinse them because they can be a bit older than the ones done at home ... that is all ;D

Oh you are doing a good job with Jazz. If you keep offering a wide variety of foods Jazz will eat everything he is given as he matures. Just a little info i picked up with my readings, sprouted seeds is best fed to our birds when the first sign of the little sprout is showing. Apparently that is when its at its most nutritious as the seed grows it takes on a bitter taste. But then again it depends on what seeds are used. Also as far as seed goes i have also read that parrots do need a certain amount of dry seed in their diet they actually benefit from the oils but again all in moderation of course. I don't use the supermarket sprouts they don't have big enough packets for my lot. ;D So i am afraid i have to do my own. I might also mention i sprouted to much seed on the weekend that i had to freeze it so it didn't go off. What a great idea that turned out to be. Now i just pop a pack out of the freezer run water over it add all the other stuff & food is prepared. And the best part is i have a few weeks supply. Please don't anyone tell me i froze all the goodness out of it.

Usually i try and make my own because the supermarket packs last me two days! i only use them when i'm out of sprouting seeds or if i'm too lazy to make myself.

Only problem i can see with freezing them is that they are all most nutritious at different stages, so you might be freezing it before it's optimum time. Other than that, it's probably much easier. i usually make 4-5 cups at a time, and then sit there picking all the mung beans out for myself! yummy!
