Do birds get the hiccups??? My lorikeet is making a constant noise like it has the hiccups and they smell too (cause he's sitting right under my chin)
Is this normal?

My Lorie also makes that noise so I'm pretty sure you don't have too much to worry about. The smell is because of the nectre they eat it tends to smell like fermented fruit.

Thanks guys. I'm just a worry mum! That's the first thing I noticed when we first held the little ratbag was that he/she ( we don't know yet!) has a very noticable musk. It was just stronger. This is our first nectar eater, there is so much more to learn! One other question tho. When looking up info on Lorikeets before we purchased, alot of them were conflicting in their texts. One in particular said to feed seed (I know your not suppose to do that) and insects like mealworms. Can you feed them mealworms?? Because if you can that's 4 birds on my kitchen floor making a mess during mealworm time!! ;D a quail, a rosella, a king parrot and a lorikeet!!! I think I need a bigger kitchen! Thanks again Amanda

Seed, yes I give mine a small amount of sunflower seed she usually dunks it in her wet mix and then plays with it. As far as meal worm are concerned if you think about it in the wild they do come accross grubs in the flowers they go to in the trees when looking for necterso it stands to reason that they would chomp on them occasionally, but i wouldnt make them a part of the diet, perhaps as a treat.

I do not give seed to my lorikeets at all as it wears away the bristles on their tongue
